Copenhagen in May?
 

Looking to possibly do a quick city trip to Copenhagen in late May (around Memorial Day) from Atlanta. We would be on the ground (including day of arrival, but not day of departure) for 4 days. From the bit of reading I have done, that looks like a sufficient amount of time to spend there, but I am wondering about the tourist volume. High? Low? I imagine it gets busier later into June? Thanks for any input!

Copenhagen is a cruise port. If you go to any cruise booking sites and look for cruises with Copenhagen as a port of call, you see June is peak, but May gets as many ships as August = a lot of concentrated tourists.

I was in Copenhagen just around that time two years ago. The city core was full of cruise passengers with those unmistakable name tags. While relatively speaking, the tourist volume in Copenhagen is nothing compared to Italy. Still, it is getting to be a losing battle to find a time to visit with noticeably less crowds to well known destinations even during what used to be a shoulder season.

I was in Copenhagen this year in late May and can confirm what Greg said. It was busy but still bearable compared to certain other cities. Cruise passengers tend to cover very limited ground like large herds of cattle, hence they are easily avoided. At the tourist hotspots you have to bear with them. Of course horrendous crowds assemble around Little Mermaid. Very few then move further along Langelinie, though. And so on. The beautiful Thorvaldsen museum was almost empty, for example.

I had problems in two spots because of too many people: 1. at the tower of Christiansborg palace because access is limited to 40 persons at a time - come by 20 minutes before they open in the morning and stand in line if you want to gho up. (An easier viewpoint without limitations is Rundetaarn). 2. the harbour buses. They take only a very limited number of passengers and left half the crowd standing on the landing including myself, with the next boat due an hour later.

If you intend to do a cruise on one of the tour boats round the harbour (which I highly recommend), the cleverest thing to do is taking the first cruise in the morning at 9:30 or 10:00.

Thank you quokka. We had similar experiences in Alaska and Istanbul. If we avoided the high demand "cruiser" sites, it was like the ships were not even there. Do you think 4 days is a good span of time to enjoy the city? Thanks again.

Four days, or rather three and a half since you are counting your arrival day, is imho the minimum you need for a city like Copenhagen. It surely isn't too long!

If you are willing to work around the cruise-ship tourists -- which you'll have to do later, too -- I think 4 days in Copenhagen in May sounds great! And with the time you have, you probably have time for a day trip to Roskilde. :-)
