Copenhagen hotel help needed
 

Hello,
Need hotel for pre-cruise in May, 2011. Want to be near Tivoli gardens. So far only found The Square and The Imperial.
Any info on either of these or others? Prefer one that includes breakfast.
I have looked on Tripadvisor and a lot of them have conflicting reviews.
Also, when website says large double bed does that mean queen or does it really mean a double (which is not very big for two adults)?

Don't know these hotels in particular - but beds in europe tend to be smaller than in the US. they call King what we call Queen. A full double may be what they are calling a "large" double. I've seen some hotel with sort of 3/4 beds (very odd) - find for a single but not more.

If you are looking for a Queen bed you have to search for that specifically and expect it will probably be an upscale and more expensive room.

We stayed at the Radisson Royal across from Tivoli with sweeoping views of the aprk and the city.. The hotel and king bedded room were nice but we didn't care for the area.If we return, we'd stay in Nyhaven.

why didn't you care for the area?? I thought that was the place to be...near everything? I looked at the Radisson Royal...not in my budget. I'm also looking at Hotel Alexander and Clarion Mayfair. Where's Nyhaven in comparison?

We just came from First Kong Frederik - it's sort of on another side of Radhuspladsen from Tivoli, but very close. They have great included breakfast, free drinks in the room fridge, Cirkel bus if you need it right at the door.

Don't know the bed size, my husband and I are not exactly skinny, no problems. The room was small of course, but not tiny.

We took bus 5A from the airport to the Radhus stop less than a block away, and bus 26 to Freeport (it was a weekday) - the stop is by Tivoli across from Andersen monument.

TAW, some people prefer to stay close to water in Copenhagen, it's just a personal choice. The Radhus area is good too.

First Kong Frederik looks very nice...when I went to their website there were no vacancies for my dates plus the rate would have been 6285DKK for total 3 nts. However otel.com has rooms avail for $621UDS. Something wrong with this picture or am I confused?

The Marriott is a good walk away from Tivoli. The Palace Hotel is almost opposite the Square Hotel, haven't been in that hotel since it was a Meridien though and it was a bit dated then.

I've crossed off Marriott and Palace from my list...

I made my reservations through Expedia approx. 140 US$ a night, I think, and it was way in advance - the price went up later.

I just typed in random dates - Sept 24 Sat $246, Sept 25 Sun $178 - this is more then we paid, much more.

Hotel Alexandra and Imperial in that area are getting better reviews on Expedia, confirm with Trip Advisor.

If not, choose a different area - buses are really good in Copenhagen, there is also a metro stop not far.

The area from Tivoli through Radhus Square and from the beginning of the Stroget were too commercial for our tastes, fast food restaurants, etc. We prefered Nyhaven along the water or perhaps another similar neighborhood.

A couple of years ago we stayed at the Marriott which we got via Priceline (we bid around $120). The rack rate was close to $400! I suggest you check biddingfortravel.com for tips on how to bid. The Marriott is very close to Tivoli and it was a nice size room (not a common thing for hotels in Copenhagen).

I just read your post that you crossed out the Marriott. I hope it wasn't because of the comment that it is a "good walk" from Tivoli. Is less than 15 mins too long of a walk?
If you want a hotel right in front of Tivoli there is the Radisson Royal, where we have also stayed but it is very expensive for what it offers (very small rooms).

yes, actually that was why I crossed it off my list. We're seniors and like to just go out of the hotel and wander around. I'm sure a flat 15 min walk would be doable. I'll probably re-look at it. Thanks

I am priceline and biddingfortravel challenged...don't know how they work. I usually book directly with hotel.

BTW, do most or all of these hotels have elevators?

I stayed at the Alexander and it was nice, great breakfast buffet. Good location for train station and Tivoli. And, yes, walking distance to Nyhavn.

by the way, when we checked in our promised room at Hotel Alexandra was not available so instead they put us, for one night, in the top floor corner room (best in the building, look at a photo) for the same price. Then they apologized for the 'inconvenience' and gave us a bottle of wine!

The Marriot is a really good hotel, it's perfectly walkable to Tivoli, as others have said 15mins or so. I didn't want to give the impression that is was just around the corner. There are non refundable advance purchase rates available sometimes which might be worth looking at.

The Palace Hotel looks as if it is now Scandic Palace so might have been renovated or updated, the reviews seem ok on TA - the location is very central, being opposite the Square. I'll take a look when I'm there in a couple weeks.

If a water location is preferred, the Copenhagen Island hotel is really nice but not walkable from Tivoli, same as the Radisson Scandinavia which is on the other side of the bridge.

If departing on a cruise consider The Admiral for a hotel remodeled from a warehouse near the docks and not far from Nyhavn. Anyone know if it is still so named and operating? I wouldn't consider the stroll down the pedestrian way to Tivoli so far.
