Copenhagen for 1 week for family?
 

We are at the early stages of planning a trip at end of school year (mid-June, 2020) and Copehagen caught our eyes because of fairly affordable airfares. Besides, I am the only person who has been there once as a child. My husband has never been. our child is 7. Do you think there will be enough things to do to keep us occupied for 6 days? We don't mind daytrips by train/bus/ferry etc but would prefer not to rent a car and drive. We also prefer to stay at one base instead of moving every few nights.

Another concern for us would be the expense, as I know Scandinavia is a lot more expensive than other parts of Europe. We prefer to stay in apartments (Airbnbs) so we don't need to eat out for every meal, as well as having more space for our very active child. I haven't done any research yet but I'm hoping for input from people (esp with kids) who have been there and share your thoughts. Thanks!

Do you have netflix? There is a show called Feed Phil and he went to Copenhagen and took his family. I want to go now. Very interesting and he visited areas that I think you would like. It is on my list now. So clean and beautiful.

There's plenty to do in 6 days IMO. Aside from Copenhagen, there are trips you can take outside of the city to get a feeling of Denmark, all by train.
EG Helsingoer and Kronborg Castle, Louisana Museum, Gilleleje fishing village, Hornbaek seaside village, Bellevue beach, Charlottenlund, Klampenborg are beautiful areas of Copenhagen, Bakken & the Deerpark.

As far as it being expensive, I find NY more expensive. There are places to eat that are inexpensive, eg top floor restaurant at Magasin department store where they serve up Danish dishes at a reasonable price, Cafe Sorgenfri, various bakeries eg Lagkagehuset which is a chain found all over Denmark serving rolls, cakes etc. If you go to Helsingoer for Kronborg castle, you can have lunch on the ferry to Sweden (you just stay on the ferry back and forth between Denmark and Sweden), buy a lunch ticket. Irma Supermarket is more upmarket and has good food products and found all over Copenhagen. There are pølser stands all over Copenhagen selling hotdogs. There are some food markets too, Torvehallerne is well known

If you are planning to be there on the 20-24 June, bear in mind it is Midsummer which is a big deal to Scandinavians with lots of celebrations and UEFA 2020 also mid June.

Not at all, there will be celebrations, bonfires lit in various places, people having picnics etc and events will be announced nearer the time.

Another place that might be interesting for children (& adults) is Sofiero Castle just outside Helsingborg. If you go to Helsingoer and take the ferry which takes 15 mins (same ferry that you can opt to stay on and have lunch), get off at Helsingborg, take the bus, takes 20 mins to Sofiero. The gardens are magnificent and there is a view towards Öresund. There'll be something special for midsummer, maybe a midsummer festival.

Sophienholm is a lovely manor house in the Copenhagen suburb of Lyngby, not really on the main tourist trail, nice place for lunch, you can get there by boat from Lyngby. Their website isn't great. Nice day out,

And of course there are lots of things to see/do in Copenhagen itself eg Experimentarium, Kastellet etc etc.

I think your son would like the Viking Museum in Roskilde, about half an hour from Copenhagen. There is also an impressive cathedral

With day trips, I think Copenhagen for a week would be lovely!

I didn't find Copenhagen particularly expensive. If your family rides bicycles, you'll find the rental bikes there all you need for getting around the city. I loved Tivoli-- and I didn't have a child with me. It would be even more fun to take some kids.

This is probably a bit of a stretch with only a week to visit, but quite some years ago I spent a month in a cottage near Aarhus (a very nice town in and of itself) and was absolutely fascinated by L'Homme Grauballe (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grauballe_Man). It's 3-hour train ride from Copenhagen, so might not be a good idea on a short trip, and it also might be creepy for a 7-yo, but it fascinated me.

We spent a week in Copenhagen and did not have children with us and did not do any day trips and we had no problem finding fascinating things to do/see. Our was was doing a study abroad semester there, so we were visiting him and he played tour guide for us;) We did not find Copenhagen to be expensive, but of course that would depend on what you are used to for comparison sake.

In my opinion, a week is perfect! It has been a little while since I have been there, but I remember that the prices were not crazy expensive. And if you are on a budget, there are many ways to have a cheaper meal or accommodation.

Thanks for all your replies and we are excited! I just booked plane tickets for mid-June and we will be staying for 7 nights. Now time to research on Airbnb and activities. Will look at all your suggestions. :)

Definitely check out the go boats. Great way to see the area from the water, on your time, and take a picnic etc. The canal tours are fun too, there are several companies that do those. The little mermaid is fun to see, but is very crowded on land, and you can see it from the canal tour, but if you want a photo then you are better off on land. Tivoli is an obvious choice with a child. Many people would avoid Christinia with a child, but you can easily get past pusher street very quickly, and the rest of it is pretty interesting. The housing area is fun to check out, and you can wander on the paths. The Round Tower is fun, Stroget the main pedestrian street has loads of shopping but is also just interesting, and of course all the museums and Rosenborg Castle.

There is a Changing of the Guard ceremony that your son would probably enjoy.

If you rent an apartment see if you can rent a "family bike" and a bike from the same people. 55% of all journeys are done by bike in Copenhagen and it is incredibly safe. Have a go and save some money

Because such a large percentage of people cycle, the cycle lines can be congested. You need to follow the bike rules, else be fined. Here is some info:-
