Copenhagen & Stockholm
Hi All
trip planned for June will be in Copenhagen early to mid June staying at Axel Guldmeden in Copenhaen for 2 nights and Radison Blu waterfront in Stockholm for 3 nights. - we will be taking trains from airports to central train stations upon airport arrivals - should we purchase multi-daycity transit passes? - any 'must sees' based on personal experiences - any tours or attractions we should pre-book so we don't miss all tips and advice is greatly appreciated....thanks. |
I always buy a transport pass if one is available, then you can take a bus or metro one stop if you feel like it without worrying about the fare. Or ride a bus somewhere off the tourist grid just for a look.
I absolutely loved Stockholm, Copenhagen not as much. Day trip to Roskilde from Copenhagen was worthwhile, boat trip into the archipelago from Stockholm even more so. For my TR go here and use the links at the top of the page (you'll get to Stockholm via Gothenburg: https://mytimetotravel.wordpress.com...s-in-roskilde/ |
Here are some places I like to go in Copenhagen:
Tivoli Gardens in the evening, lots of places to eat and it's a gentle old fashioned theme park Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek which is next to Tivoli Nyhavn - nice for a stroll and a place to take a canal trip from. Christiania is interesting to take a look Paper Island food market Kastellet - very close to your hotel Rosenborg Castle, right in central Copenhagen Ilums Bolighus - department store with Scandinavian design Conditori La Glace - fantastic cakes Sankt Peders Bageri - one of the most famous bakeries, the Danish pastries in Denmark are very different (i.e. 1000x better) than those abroad The deer park at Bakken and a trip to the beach at Bellevue Restaurant Schønnemann for smørrebrød (Danish open sandwiches) Louisiana Museum Karen Blixen's House at Rungsted Eating herrings in various marinades at Hornbaek beach (if you go to Helsingoer to see Hamlet's castle, you can visit Hornbaek which is a charming seaside town and has better fish these days than Gilleleje.) In Stockholm, a trip to the Vasa Museum and around the archipelago are musts IMO. The food scene is not quite as good as Copenhagen, but Stockholm is more beautiful. I love both cities and visit each several times a year. |
Yu are really giving both cities very short shrift - only 1 day in C and 2 in Stockholm.
As you can see the sights in Copenhagen - with trips to nearby casltes - can take a week at least. In Sotckholm the main sights are: Gamla Stan (Old Town) Royal Palace Town Hall (of Nobel prize fame) Vasa reconstructed ship/museum Skansen Museum of Swdish life with docents/typical activities and zoo Boat trip pout to drottingholm (summer palace in the archapelago) At least 3 major museums delending on your interests, art, prehistoy/viking/current day, arts and crafts Plus too many other minor places than can be listed, including a variety of day trips, starting with Visby and Uppsala |
Stockholm offers reduced fare transit passes for seniors if you qualify.

thanks for the tips, yes our itinerary is challenging but that keeps us hopping. Last time we were in Europe in 2014 we went to Barcelona, flew to Seville, drove to Cordoba, drove to Granada, flew back to Barcelona...5 hotels in 7 nights....great exciting intense trip to be honest...
we are leaving very soon...i will submit a Trip Report upon return. |
follow my name back to last summer for a cycle based tour of Denmark including Copenhagen

Stockholm: Old Town, walk from the Old Town via Strandvägen to the Vasa Museum, then walk to Rosendals trädgård, also in Djurgården.
I wouldn't go to Skansen unless I had small children with me. Last time I was there for a conference (I live in Stockholm) I though the restaurant was terrible and the park too run-down. I'd go to the Nordiska Museet instead (depending on the exhibition though, lots of boring stuff). Then maybe walk towards the Italian Embassy and Waldemarsudde. If you like walking, walking around Djurgården is the best Stockholm has to offer. Nothing beats that. I'd skip the Royal Castle downtown and take a boat to Drottningholm which is where the king&queen live year-round. For a day in the archipelago I'd go to Sandhamn. If you like bohemian/multikult, dine in Södermalm, otherwise Östermalm. I wouldn't go out around your hotel. People visiting me usually enjoy Oaxen Slipen in Djurgården. Very nice and interesting walk from Djurgårdsbron (the first bridge to Djurgården). All I have mentioned is quite close to you hotel so you could walk everywhere. What you should definitely pre-book is restaurants. |
Thanks for all your tips, our trip went wonderfully, first time we didn't get a car in Europe
London - I know it well, we stayed at the novotel paddington and used the tube via oyster cards to get everywhere..London Eye, British Museum, Trafalgar Square, Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey Copenhagen - train from airport to central station was very easy, stayed 2 minutes from the station at Axel Guldmusson, loved walking around Copenhagen and definitely recommend hop-on bus to get a feel for the city (although there are competing companies with the same color buses so it can be a little confusing) round tower, rosenburg palace, amalienburg palace, meat packing area for new restaurants, Nyhavn area. Stockholm - bus from airport to central station - easy to find and get on, stayed at Radisson Blu Waterfront, awesome hotel and great rooms and perks with business class rooms. We again used hop-on bus to learn the layout of the city. Stockholm was great but not as great as London and Copenhagen, lots of construction everywhere plus they have made some decisions about modern buildings in the main part of town that takes away from the traditional beauty of more classic architecture.....but overall a great great trip. |
Thanks for reporting back, glad the trip went well. I preferred Stockholm and its archipelago, but good that we're all different.
