That it what its called - and is not rude or unprofessional in any way. Just a cultural difference. Brits think Americans are sorta naff saying they are going to the 'Bathroom' . . . are you planning on taking a bath ?? ;)

>>The guide kept repeating how this school sends more kids there than Eton. Like over and over again. <<

You may find that guides on coach tours sometimes play fast and loose with the facts.

In the part of the US I live in it's called the "rest room". Even more chichi. Are you going to have a rest? (Well, if you're a wait person at least you'll get off your feet for a tiny bit, so more accurate than bathroom...)

Also, why did you tip the driver 10 GBP??? That's nearly a 30% tip in a situation where it's not even required.

Just wondering about the title - why are you a “cool mom”?

I also wonder what on earth you thought would happen to you on a busy tube train.

haha! Yes, makes sense. I think "Ladies room" is a good general international description.

MissPrism: I had never traveled a tube train so late at night before and we were 2 females traveling alone. My cousin and his family were traveling in the opposite direction. Now I am more familiar so would feel more comfortable. As far as what could happen, there are many things.

Because that's what my teen thinks I am. Aren't I cool for taking her on this trip? Exposing her to a different country, culture, history, etc.

I tipped $10.00, not 10 GBP. All I had was a $10 bill. Was I not to even tip anything? He waited for a long time at the airport.

Yes. Tipping customs differ by country. Also, tipping in USD is a horrible idea.

Well I asked the driver if he wanted it and he said yes.

Ah you have wandered into "tipping wars" a massive cross cultural game that plays out on Fodors between Americans and Europeans every two months or so. Step away from the keyboard Jamila.

BTW I think you are cool.

If your daughter thinks you're cool - who are we to argue ?

(we won't talk about the 'tipping thing')

Sounds like a great trip and no point in worrying about any travel "mistakes" now. Thanks for sharing your report and I am wondering about your impression of the hotel. (My apologies if I missed it). The location is excellent - just wondering about the rooms and also any outside noise.

Denisea: We've always had good stays in London, but I would have to say the Conrad was the best stay we've had thus far! We had a Twin Executive Room which was similar to American style hotel rooms in terms of space, but larger than the standard room in London. Room finishes are nice. Service is very good. When we first arrived, we ate lunch at the hotel restaurant and heard and felt the tube going by. I requested a room away from the St. James's Park Station tracks and luckily we didn't feel or hear anything. The Executive Lounge offerings are plenty, especially the afternoon tea desserts. We used the lounge often. The location is perfect for sightseeing. We took the train a lot more than we planned to since it was across the street. Every time we came back from somewhere, there was someone to greet us with a big smile. I would definitely come back here our next trip to London. Highly recommend without any hesitation!

Thanks so much. I have a ton of Hilton points and have been looking at the Conrad in case the apartment we want isn't available. I appreciate your response and the additional information. I am a light sleeper - even with ear plugs!

Adding this to my to-do list in London. Thank you for your report!

denisea: I also booked on points. Make sure to email the hotel ahead time. They were very receptive. I booked a standard award and got upgraded to executive room which is two levels up. Our room was around the corner from the executive lounge.
