Cool, charming or romantic hotels in Nice, Eze, Menton area?

Hello,

I've just decided to spend a few days on the Eastern Riviera with an old amour (and by old, I mean previous, not ancient). Can anyone suggest what to do with 3-4 days there during the first week of January (brrr!)? We'd like to find a cool/charming/romantic hotel or two (in Nice, Eze, Villafranche,or Menton) at around 200 euros. Would anyone like to make a suggestion? Thanks!

Cheaper than this, but charming/curious for its individually painted/decorated rooms, is the Hotel Windsor in Nice.

Look at the Grimaldi in Nice and Hotel Welcome in Villefranche. The Prince des Galles in Menton is not bad and I love that town.

regardless of the hotel, I would stay in Nice rather than other ( small) towns.

We are just back from a week in Nice and I'd recommend staying in Nice and perhaps doing a day trip to Eze or Menton. There are lots of places that are close by, you can get the bus or train. There is a lot to do in Nice and loads of shops and restaurants. We stayed in an apartment, not sure you'd want that for just a few days. If you are interested, here is the website www.nicepebbles.com

they are recommended on www.slowtrav.com which also might have some good ideas for you.

Eze might be nice and romantic. Friends have stayed at the Hermitage there and loved it. I do love Eze but have never stayed overnight but would like to.

Babette - just a thought about getting to Eze if you end up going (we didn't have time, maybe on our next trip!). The train stops at Eze but the station is right at the bottom, near the sea. Eze village is about 1000 steps uphill. There is a path or a bus will take you up there. If you catch a bus from Nice, the bus will drop you right at Eze village, at the top. The tourist office will give you a timetable and the correct bus number.

I'll second the Windsor Hotel in Nice. We stayed there about 10 years ago. It is charming and as I remember has a nice garden. I like Nice as a base for the Riviera, in general, but it would be nice to stay in Eze village sometime too...

I would visit St. Paul-de-Vence and the open air museum at Fondacion Maeght
