Cookoo Clocks
Does anyone know where I can find a cookoo clock in Munich, Germany? I want to get one for my wife. Any idea if they are cheaper in the US or Germany? Also which ones are better automatic or manual. Any pointers on what to look for when buying a cookoo clock. What is a reasonable price for a cookoo clock.

There is a store that sells tons of them in the fussganger zone between Karlsplatz and Marienplatz a little ways down toward Marienplatz from the wild boar statue and on the same side. I don't know the prices or the quality but you might want to do a little websurfing before you go to get an idea of what you want and the prices they are going for. Also try EBAY just to see.

Try googling Cuckoo clocks....

try going into a large dept store in Munich. That's what we did - there were many different types and more resonably priced than in the tourist shops in smaller towns.

Cuckoo clocks are not typically Bavarian. Normal stores in Munich won't have them - perhaps some big department stores. They'll be on sale in some tacky tourist souvenir shops in the Marienplatz/Hofbräuhaus area. Probably "made in China" or something like that. Original hand-carved cuckoo clocks made in the Black Forest will be hard to find outside the Black Forest.

The nice cuckoo clocks even in the Black Forest are several hundred euro. There are many different types (those that need to be wound daily, and those that need to be wound weekly). Very pretty, many designs. If you can get a VAT form, take it - it can save you a bundle, and many stores that sell cuckoo clocks in Black Forest accept them.
