cooking classes in Sardinia
 
We are going to be in Sardinia in September and wonder if there are good cooking classes anywhere on the island, specifically dealing with the unique Sardinian foods/culture. Does anyone know whether these exist and if there are good ones? Thank you.

When you get to Sardegna, if you are going beyond the resorts of the Costa Smeralda, or the cruise ship ports, you will be shocked at how the food of each little part of Sardegna is very different from the food of another part of the rather small island. You will also be wondering how on earth you could possibly duplicate at home the amazing food you are eating -- since so much of it is totally dependent on hyper-local ingredients. The flavor of cheese, honey, beef, pork + herbs is quite different in Sardegna, as is the wine and oil used in cooking.

This is not to discourage you from taking a cooking class. You will be fascinated and learn, I'm sure, some valuable wisdom about cooking and ingredients But it's not easy to drive all around the island, so if you find a good cook to teach you, then you will learn the local cooking (of the mountains or the sea or the pastures). If you want to learn how to cook a specific dish -- like pane vrittau or pasta with bottarga etc -- you need to go where locals eat that dish.

I would suggest asking on TripAdvisor (where residents of the island answer questions) or contacting the Home Food organization in Bologna and asking them for help.

if you go to local "agriturismo" or bed and breakfast I am sure they organize cooking classes.
Some restaurants i have been around Italy organize private cooking classes if you ask, but nothing advertised. Just be careful as Sardinia is a very touristic place and could be expensive and also a reap off.

There is only one small corner of Sardegna that is luxury tourism, and apart from the Costa Smeralda & Alghero, most of Sardegna gets very few tourists.

funtrip - massimop offers some relevant advice whereas bussa17 seems to be winging it (registered July 2017 and most postings about Japan).

True Sardinian cooking is pretty unique and many ingredients they use are hard to find in continental Italy let alone further afield. However, the principle of using local ingredients and the combination of flavours is transferable. I have many memories of diving for sea urchins as well as bent over along the sea shore collecting arselle which are like very small clams.

I would disagree with massimop about tourists in Sardinia - the south coast - west and east of Cagliari can get pretty crowded in the summer months.
