Cooking Classes in Dordogne

Inspired by the experiences of my friend Anselm, we have been tossing around the idea of taking some cooking classes while in Dordogne. I see that there is one called Cooking In France in Carlux run by a Jim and Lucy Fisher. Does anyone know anything about them or any other classes available in this region? (perhaps Carlux, herself, will shed some light on this).

Anyone... Anyone?

Contact Eric Vasseur, the chef at Relais de Cinq Chateau in Vezac.

He is very friendly, has travelled and worked as a chef all over the world (we have eaten at his restaurant somewhere in Asia more than 5 years ago), speaks good English, and knows the culinary ways within the Perigord.

There are cooking classes held at Chateau de Puy Robert outside Montignac; not sure at what times of the year. This is a spectacularly beautiful area..the Vezere Valley. Be sure to drive around even if you do not take the classes there.

Forget the Puy Robert..their web site says they are not taking reservations..

Bob, although I know nothing about these particular classes, I took a cooking class in Chiang Mai when I was in Thailand a couple of years ago. It turned out to be fantastic, one of the highights of the trip.

So my adice it to go for it, especially since you'll be staying right in Carlux where it's offered. You were asking on another thread about staying in a small village. Well, this would also be the perfect opportunity to meet other locals and travellers and find some answers to this question.

Where is St Cirq when you need her? :-) :-)

StCirq Nov 7th, 2006 03:23 PM

She's right here! Sorry, but I've been in hypertravel mode since July - twice to Umbria and all over the USA. Plus really busy at work and play.

The only cooking classes I know about in the Dordogne are the ones I give, but I won't be back there until March probably. There is a well-known (and expensive) cooking school in Les Eyzies, the name of which escapes me at the moment, but I believe a google search would unearth it. It was written up in Condé Nast or Travel & Leisure about a year ago. If I locate it, I'll post the name. Otherwise, I'd guess the tourist office in Sarlat could get you the names of lpenty of people in the area offering lessons.

Good luck!

Just a note to say that the cooking class robjame mentions is not in Carlux, but about 25 minutes away, between St Amand de Coly and St Genies - both very attractive towns. http://www.cookinfrance.com/

The site comes up when you search Carlux because someone from here attended a class, not because it is based here.

They seem to have trained with good people in England, but I havent heard anything about them here. But then we aren't in the Brit network.

The cooking school that StCirq mentioned is called La Combe

www.lacombe-perigord.com (I think this is the site)

I don't think they give one or two day classes, however. A journalist friend of mine wrote it up for Travel and Leisure a year or so ago.

Thank you all for your suggestions. This certainly gives us enough to work with and hopefully we can arrange something.

I'm sorry, but what is this supposed to mean ??

robjame,
I remember your food photos all too well (still salivating), but did you ever do a trip report of your visit to Dordogne and...was it Langudoc? I found the resaurant reviews, but was wondering about your actual itinerary.

Yep, I'm gearing up to go back to France! :D

Good luck with the cooking class.

Oh dear me, please pardon those typos. Languedoc, restaurant, etc.
