Well, I must say that if there is any place in the world where people lie in wait just to attack someone's choice of words it is the bulletin board "world". Is it always necessary to start a war? This is not the old AOL travel board. Anyway re Barcelona-One word-Gaudi'

ekellyga: Here is a link to our trip report from 4 years ago:

http://www.fodors.com/community/euro...ue-cousins.cfm

It gets pretty long winded, but may be of some help.

We headed up the Costa Brava and stayed in Cadeques. We loved it and would love to go back some day and spend more time exploring. We also spent time in San Sebastian and visiting family near Pamplona. We were pretty much on the go. With 10 days, you could split Costa Brava and San Sebastian. Or concentrate on the Costa Brava and Pyrenees in Catalunya.

Good luck and report back!!

I agree with Danon, 10 days in San Sebastian is too much if it is not July or August and you like to do more than eat food and go to the beach like me. Barcelona is a world class city. 10 days is not enough to visit all of the places the op wants to go to. Since San Seb is the farthest you should save it for another trip. And yes there is a posse of posting police on all forums, much like the moral police in Saudi Arabia, Iran etc.

thanks Egbert. I agree about some people being a bit too quick to "shoot down" a new posters.
It would be easier to give suggestions if there was some indication by the poster (s) of: time of the year they plan on traveling, interests , budget, mode of transportation, etc.
On the other hand, many "old" poster have their favorites
and are entitled to say so.

Planning to go in Mid May of '11. I understand that Barcelona is a great city with much to see, but wife and I prefer to see small towns and scenery. Not into the beach much at all. We cover a lot of ground pretty quickly (wonder if I will catch a lecture from someone about that comment too!). Will have a rental car, would like to see some of the Pyrennes (probably Andora, and then small towns along the northern coast.

I'll "bite my tongue", at least for a while, about the posters who find it necessary to call me out for the way I posted. If minor issues such as that, bother you that much that you cannot ignore it and move on, then life is going to continue to be tough for you. My sympathies.

since I don't give two hoots whether the poster goes to any of those places or Newnan, Georgia, for her holidays,

Now I'm offended that someone has dissed Newnan, Georgia. Some people around here really have nerve.

Andora (Principality of Andorra) and small towns along the northern coast (Green Spain?)! Yes, it seems you are planning on covering a lot of ground, quickly, if all you have is 10 days for this "adventure". Good luck and watch out for the speed traps!

Andora, by the way, is a town on the Italian Riviera, up the coast from Nice, not in the eastern Pyrenees.

Bite harder. I was not going to respond, but your subsequenrt responses and attitide confirms your childish approach.

The people on the board are volunteers. Present company excluded, there are many generous, knowledgeable, and gracious contributors including many Spaniards. In 99% of the cases it a cordial place even when there is a disagreement.

Rudely and without reason you write "convinve me," as if you are the king or queen and we are your subjects.

While others are much more forgiving, I just assume you think everyone you encounter are either your subjects or not worthy of polite discussion.

Since you are asking for a favor, politeness is always a good thing. And most children learn that.

OK. I'll be more precise. Go north to France and from Perpignan, in France, go west toward Prades. Near Prades there are some old abbeys in the mountains that will fulfill your hiking needs. Take the road up to La Tour de Carol, go back down toward Foix, and then go to St. Bertrand de Comminges. From there cross over to Spain and go see Taüll. Getting the Green Guides that cover those areas should give you more information about what to see in the area.

Yes life is tough for some of us. Our 57 inch Sony died. I can barely make out Maria Sharipova on this puny 55 inch replacement. Hopefully we have hit bottom.

ekellyga - contrats for sticking with us - i too am mystified by the hostility your innocent post has evinced.

i haven't done a touring holiday based on Barcelona, but we did spend a long weekend there last year, and I think that you would be short-changing yourselves if you didn't spend perhaps 2 nights there before you set off on your tour.

For good ideas of where to go from Barcelona, the cadogan guides are very good as they are written with driving in mind. Amazon has the one on Barcelona and Catalonia for £8.95 [ditto the northern spain one but it doesn't cover Barcelona].

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Barcelona-Ca...der_1860114210

travelling in May, with just two of you, you probably would not have to book in advance except in Barcelona. why not read a few books, then come back here [possibly hidden in a chador?] with ideas for an itinerary?

spain is really lovely and you should be able to have a great trip.
