saylor, zen is not a newbie, been here since 2003. You must be a reincarnated fodorite. You do have it all wrong about Starrs.
Just wanted to add that my credit union has now given us a card that is used for atm and debit. We had two different cards before. Hoping that was the problem before when traveling. Still good to have a backup atm card.

I pondered starting a new thread about this but thought it would be better to start here.
I'm in the early stages of putting together our May/June 2016 trip. Airline tickets are booked so I'm pleased that I can now say that we're definitely going...vs just dreaming.
I was SHOCKED when I checked the exchange rate the other day...1€ is $1.10...that's amazing! When I went to Europe last 1€ was nearly $1.50. I just hadn't been paying attention to the rate since the last trip.
In light of that would it not make some sense to possibly buy Euro now to use in 10 months? I know it's all a gamble...and that the Euro may be worth even less. Does anyone a bit more savvy in finances and world politics have any thought on if the Euro is more likely to climb vs. fall from where it is in the next year? Once again...I realize it's a guessing game, but some are more plugged into this than I am I'm sure.
I've never pre purchased Euro (beyond $100 once for a taxi after a late night flight) so this would be new territory for me if I did.

Wekiva, what you are talking about is a gamble on exchange rates. This forum is populated mostly by people who are not in the position to know much about future exchange rates.
Someone like Dianne Yelland might be able to help. But she never posts on here.
Bummer.

Zenfoodist, speaking of HS, you've certainly done a lot since your 16th birthday in 2010!

OMG, Inspector Gadget, you figured me out. The 21 year old mother of an 11 year old. The scandal it caused me...you will never be able to fathom.

Well you're on your own for this kind of game...
Let me says 2 things :
1. if you think 1.1 is a change that is confortable for you, why not do it ?
2. If you can part with this money for one year, again why not
3. I work for an international company, what we read and what I hear is that the 'normal' ratio USD/EUR 'should' be about 1,25.
1,5 was extreme, 1.1 is too low.
Now I've known $ at 0,9 -> so it can still go lower.
Prospects for a EURO recovey are relatively bleak but USA have accumulated huge debts too. So USD could plunge, even if I don't think EUR should recover soon.
All in all, my personal belief, which is only valid for me, is that the risk of USD goind down is higher than going up against EURO.
But it will be your money, your guess, your risk.

I have ordered euros from my bank for my last several trips. There is I think a $7.95 flat fee charge, otherwise the rate is the same as I would get if I withdrew from an ATM in Europe (setting aside whatever fees would be charged by the bank operating the ATM). I don't take cash in an convert it but just put in a request for euros and go pick them up, and the money comes out of my account just like using my ATM card. To me it seemed to come out about the same as using a European ATM and having (potentially) to pay additional fees to the bank operating the ATM, plus I had the convenience of having euros on arrival and not needing to use the sometimes-sketchy airport ATMs.

European banks do not charge for withdrawing money; it's the U.S. banks that have flat fees and higher conversion rates.

You checked the daily rate before ordering the euros?

I think she is a RHONYC but her 16th Birthday party is a bit strange.
Hi Wekiva, I bought this year at 106.00. I did it with friends and we split the fee. All three of us had apartments that we were paying in cash. I had done my deposit via paypal and just paid the balance in cash so didn't have to carry it around long.
I am getting ready to go again but we are just winging it this trip.
