Convents in Venice
 

Are there any convents in Venice that don't have or enforce curfews? Or can anyone recommend one that is convenient, at a good price and pleasant?

I haven't stayed here, but I think the location is good. It's in Dorsoduro about halfway between the Zattere and Accademia vaporetto stops. The entrance is locked at 1:00 a.m., and a double with private bath and breakfast is 135-150 euros. Not necessarily a bargain unless you're going in high season.

I have a list of convents for Venice. Most will have curfews, but extend them for summer. Some won't be available after school starts - mid/late September. When are you going?

Fosteria Santa Fosca has 12:30 am curfew and price is about 25€ for a single/double and 20€ for a dorm room.

I have info on several others, but they seem to have 11pm or earlier curfews.

Are these sites hostels or convents? Also are they on the main island or farther afield?

I am interested in others that you might have. My daughter had a history professor tell her he took a group of kids and stayed at a convent that was right on a canal that was a very nice stay.We cannot get a hold of him to find out which it might have been. Are curfews an issue when trying to experience the island.

Many are owned by a certain order, but run as hostels, but not just for students/young people. Others operate as hotels (you know it was a convent), while some still are regular convents that allow guests in certain wings. Many convents also run schools so have student housing in the convent. When school is out (summer-mid/late Sept), they rent these rooms as is the case with Santa Fosca. All the ones I listed are in Venice proper.

My priorities when staying in convents are location/private room with private bath/curfew. I don't want to share baths/rooms.

We stayed at Istituto San Guiseppe this past October. We liked it very well. We had a large room with a bath. There was an elevator. The sisters were very pleasant- not much English, but the porter/porteress spoke English. I don't remember about the curfew, but you can go to their website for information. It is on a canal about 5 minutes from San Marco. The rates are quite low, but no breakfast.

My priorities are a safe very cheep sleep with the bonus option of meeting interesting fellow travelers.
We have had response from the Cooperitiva sogna that there are availability an Casa Caburlotto for us but you have interested me in the santa fosa option. Does it have rooms with bath in suite? Would you choose one over the other? I have a review that says that Casa Caburlotto is in a not good neighborhood. What might that mean?
We would rather spend our limited budget on doing rather than sleeping.
Also can you book these without using the cooperitiva?

Casa Caburlotto is near the train station.

Santa Fosca does not have private baths, but you can get a private room really cheap. Their website says they are close to the Rialto Bridge. If you click on the different colored areas on their interactive map, you can see pictures of the rooms/baths.

Most can be booked directly with the convent/monastery. I have e-mails for most if you need them. I didn't list some convents that had 11pm curfew because I thought you wanted late as possible. If 11pm is ok, you will have more choices.

I would rather have a bath in room and curfew than to have to share a bath so if you have other suggestions i would be appreciative.

I'm posting e-mail contacts which could be old. Many places in Italy are slow to answer e-mails. Sometimes they may have to wait until someone is there that speaks English. I have phone and fax #'s if you need them.

You might find some others on Monastery Stays website. Some of the above are on there, but they are a booking engine and mark the prices up 10-15€ per night. It does let you get a look at rooms, curfew, etc. Click on one of the Venice convents on this link and you will get a map of Venice showing all of Monastery Stays listed convents. Click on each bubble on the map for that convent's info. If you see one on their website that is not listed here, just google the complete name/address and you will probably find contact info.
