Connecting rooms for 2 families in Amsterdam?
 

Looking for a central location hotel in Amsterdam to accommodate 2 families traveling together. Want each family to have separate sleeping quarters for the children as well as the parents. (8 people total) The families don't need to be on the same floor. Flexible travel dates, probably June 2018.
Must have:
2 connecting rooms per family
air conditioning
non-smoking
elevator if it's more than 1 flight of stairs up
central walkable location, not planning to use public transportation
3-5 star is fine, each family wants to stay under $500. per night if possible

We happened to get a screaming deal at the Movenpick three weeks ago, just east of Centraal station. It was $150/night for the pair of adjoining doubles.

Then when we checked in, they realized they didn't have any connecting rooms, so they sweetened the deal with breakfast for all (about another $90, but not worth paying that for).

I doubt you can do that well, but certainly way under $500.

My experience finding such rooms is that they are just feeble requests. In fact, even at hotels who claimed to have such rooms have never provided me with adjoining rooms. I have gotten two rooms across corridor from each other but never adjoining rooms. Based on this, I have given up looking for such rooms and looked for quad rooms or a suite if I really wanted all my family to be on the same side of the locked door. You will have more choices if you look at apartments. However, an elevator might be harder to come by at apartments and even if they do, they might only get to a close floor and not your floor. Also they impose tighter check-in/out times windows as well as stiffer cancellation policies.

You choice would expand if you are willing to use the public transit system in Amsterdam.

NH Centre advertises connecting rooms & has elevators & air con. Great location. Really have no idea what high season prices are. I liked staying in the hotel but as I recall breakfast was not included & the cost of adding it (there is a breakfast room) was daunting. I went out for breakfast (many excellent places a few steps away, but with kids you might want a hotel breakfast.

All hotels are non smoking. Airco is not really needed in Amsterdam.
The Movenpick is a bit away from the centre, a walk away from Centraal Station. Public transport is easy and cheap so I don't understand why you wouldn't want to use it.
The NH is handy for the museums and Vondelpark, but wonder if it isn't noisy. It is still a long walk or a tram ride from say the Anne Frankhuis and the canals.

The NH hotel where I stayed is the NH CITY CENTRE. (My mistake)

It is in the canal district, on a canal, right near the Spui (on Spuistraat). It is less than a 15 minute walk to the Anne Frank house (I didn't go, but this is according to Google.) It is 15 mins walk to Rijksmuseum and 15 minutes to the central station for the canal tours. Like the name implies, it is very much in the center of everything.

Thank you for you good suggestions. I've reconsidered using public transportation and will as needed . Other than Anne Frank house, we won't be visiting museums.

From the airport we would likely uber or take a taxi so being close to the train station shouldn't be important, maybe a tram stop would be more useful.
I'd love to have a canal view if possible. It's not necessary for the 2nd children's bedroom to have a view, just somewhat quiet and not over looking a train or pub etc.
We do not want a quad room as we don't want to have to go to bed the same time as the children, been there done that.

when I took the canal boat tour its point of departure was across from the central station and I noticed probably half a dozen tour operators also offering canal tours from there. It's possible there are other points of departure. The Amsterdam tourist board has a good website if you haven't checked it out.

Another option could be a B&B. We stayed at one several years ago, in the Jordaan, a gorgeous area of Amsterdam that is near the Anne Frank house. Our teen kids were in one room, we were in another. Delightful breakfast that included my favorite local food, poffertjes. Depending on availability, you could possibly find a B&B with four rooms, so it's only your group staying there.

It's difficult finding 2 sets of connecting rooms, central enough but not too noisy at night, plus air conditioning and an elevator. I think my needs make it $$$, but it will be what it will be.

I have found some hotels with connecting rooms but they say subject to availability at check in. This really isn't acceptable, too iffy.

Now I'm looking at Eric Vokel apartments that have multiple 2 and 3 bedroom apartments. Anyone familiar with this location? Do the rooms have soundproofing due to proximity of the train station?

May I ask, why did you end up with that specific apartment? It's not in a location that I would choose. I also wonder where the "quiet street" precisely is. I know Amsterdam quite well. He hides it on his own map, so the precise location is none too clear. Either it's on De Ruijterkade ( a freeway) or Oosterdoksstraat (near the railway line).

Not to nag, but I linked you an apartment that's quite good, right in the center of Amsterdam and for a good price. There are many more like these to be found on booking.com.

The view from the room in one of the photographs tells me it's on De Ruijterkade. Not a quiet or picturesque location by any means.

That is an urban desert location. There is hardly nothing of interest in the vicinity. You would need to walk perhaps 1 km to get to anything interesting from that apartment.

that was my first reaction too: "but there's nothing there, just traffic!"
