Connecting JFK Delta to Aer Lingus-is 90m minutes enough time?
 

Hello:

I'm planning a trip to Dublin and would like take a flight that arrives at JFK at 10:20 AM and connect to an Aer Lingus flight that departs at 12 N.

Is this enough time to connect?

We will be checking luggage and talked to Delta today and they said that they would be able to check us straight through to Dublin.

If you buy it as a single itinerary from Delta, that means they think you have time to make the connection, and that, if you miss the connection, they'll put you on the next available flight to your destination.

This is an interesting connection. Apparently there is still a luggage transfer agreement (Intertie) agreement between Delta and Air Lingus after they went their own ways several years ago ("check us straight to Dublin = luggage + passengers?). They are not in the same code share group. Air Lingus uses Terminal 5 and Delta uses Terminal 4 www.panynj.gov/airports/jfk-airlines.html. The AirTrain connecting the two is outside the secure area, so this can be a tight connection going through the security.

JFK is not one of my favorite layover airport. If you look at www.fly.faa.gov/flyfaa/usmap.jsp, it is one of the airports with frequent delays. Of course, it can work to your advantage if the second leg plane is delayed. I think the noon Air Lingus operates only in the high season arriving in DUB around midnight. At that time, there are usually couple more Air Lingus, an AA and a Delta flights later in the day but all arriving the next day morning.

Is there a later Aer Lingus flight that you can take that day if you miss this one? Do you have to check bags? Where are your seats on the Delta flight? It takes a long time to get off some flights these days if you are in the back of the plane. If your first plane arrives on time you should be ok but I love having a plan b on connections.

I would be comfortable with that time, but you won't have time to get hung up anywhere. Minimize your carry on stuff so you aren't overwhelmed getting to your DUB flight.

Thanks! We would need to change terminals, so I think this will be too tight. I hate overnight flights (can't sleep on a plane) so this flight looked like a good choice, but there are no earlier flights to JFK and would be worried we would miss the Dublin flight-better safe than sorry!

having some experience with JFK I would not be comfortable with that connection given boarding on international flights starts early and you have terminal changes etc. Sorry it just does not sound good...any chance of going via ATL or some other city?

We ended up booking flights straight through with Delta with a long layovers.

BTW, if you are coming home by Delta from DUB, find out how early you must be at airport. We did that and we went through US customs in DUB and had to be there 3 hours before takeoff but marched directly to luggage claim when we arrived at JFK.

I think you chose the wiser course of action. I wouldn't want a 90-minute connection in JFK domestically.
