connecting flights and customs
If flying from the US and connecting, say Paris, on the way to Krakow, where do we go thru customs? Paris or Krakow?

Also, if flying from Krakow to Italy via Germany, will I have to go thru customs and if so where?

Do you mean immigration/passport control? If so, that will be in the airport where your flight from the US lands.
If your bags are checked through, you may not face customs at all, since you won't claim them in Paris and you will then arrive in Poland on an intra-EU flight. However, the bags may be tagged so that you have to pick them up in a customs claim area in your final airport.
This is general information, so take it with a grain of salt -- I've not been to Poland.

Actually, if you are flying US-Paris-Krakow, I think you will clear both immigration and customs in Krakow. France is in the Schengen zone; Poland is not. If you were connecting through Paris to another Schengen location, then you'd clear immigration in Paris (your point of entry to Schengen) and customs at your destination. We flew Chicago-Warsaw this past summer, via Frankfurt (also Schengen), and this is how it worked.

If flying Krakow-Germany-Italy, I'd expect you'll go through immigration in Germany (your point of entry into the Schengen zone) and customs at your final destination.

MS go is 99% right.

But there'll only be Immigration in Germany and normally no Customs anywhere on the Krakow-Germany-Italy trip. Goods, unlike people, have free circulation within the whole EU, and your bags will be tagged to indicate they originated in the EU.

Nonetheless, all EU nations have the right to re-impose border controls on people or goods under certain circumstances, and who knows what'll happen by the time you fly?
