I have decided on the first 3 nights in Rome, then 4 nights in Positano and the last 2 nights back in Rome.
We we will do day trips to Amalfi, Ravello, Capri & Pompeii from Positano and we might try to do a day trip to Florence from Rome if we are up for it.

dtph - you have chosen wisely ;) Have a fantastic time, and since you'll be in Positano for four nights, try to get up to Il San Pietro - it's a splurge for lunch or dinner but oh so spectacular.

I'm late on the string but my only suggestion for Rome is to get a private guide for the Vatican. She/he can stand in line for you to hold your spot- the wait can go into hours- but then you'll have a guide with you inside to point out what you're seeing. We couldn't have asked for a better experience even down to recommendation on souvenier book afterwards. If you need contact info, click my name and email me directly.

Hi. I recently got back from 10 days in Italy - 5 in Amalfi. With all the good recommendations I would add just one thought - you're going on vacation to enjoy yourself not as a race where you have to squeeze as much Italy in 10 days as you can. You will enjoy Italy because the Italians enjoy their life there and have a different pace. Settle into their pace and do the things you want to do when you're there - even if it means not doing some of things you scheduled yourself to do before you left. Enjoy

If you're travelling at the end of May you do well to stay on the Amalfi/Sorrentine coast and pay a day visit to Capri. The only problem may be getting out of Positano to see the other sights as it's somewhat isolated from the transportation links like trains. Amalfi will not pose a problem since you can catch a local bus. You could go to Sorrento and catch a train to Pompeii though.
Alternatively visit this site which I can recommend for easy access to all locations.

Your itinerary now looks very do-able! But DO go back to Florence and Venice. They are glorious.
