Confused about La Marche, help!

Hi everyone
I'm confused about HOW to get to POTENZA PICENA, a town near Macerata in Le Marque region.
I'm leaving from Assisi to Potenza Picena. If you type all this info in the website of trenitalia.com it tells you that the station in Potenza Picena is called ANCONA. I don't know if this station IS in a town called Ancona (which is far from Potenza Picena) or if THAT's the name of the station IN Potenza Picena.
I'm very confused! How do I get from Assisi to this place by train??
Help please!

Hi Italy, I don't know but why don't you type in Assisi to Ancona (the town) and see if you get the same information. That would answer your question I would think. Best wishes.

I believe the name of the train station in Potenza Picena is Montelupone.

It just means that you have to change at Ancona, just as you have to at Foligno for most options. Trenitalia lists the stations where you have to change [in your case two or three], and in the column to the left of that it will tell you the time of arrival in Potenza Picena.

ItalyLove:

Potenza Picena is near the Potenza River which empties into the Adriatic at Porto Reconati, about 20 miles south of the large city of Ancona. A train from Ancona stops at Porto Potenza, only 10 miles from Potenza Picena..but no train to the latter..just a secondary highway.
From Assisi it appears that you'd have to rely on a local train departing from Foligno (about 10 miles from Assisi), that goes to Fabriano and possibly continues to the coast at Falconara..where you could catch the train that will take you further south to the aforementioned Porto Potennza.
Don't mean to confuse you, but it certainly doesn't look easy...you'd be far better off with a car which would get you from Assisi to Potenza Picena in a few hours.

..or hire a car and driver in Assisi....enjoy your vacation by limiting the stress!

If you look on the website for the commune of Potenza Picena, you will see that it says the train stop (ferrovia) is Montelupone.

However, a bed and breakfast in Potenza Picena says the way to reach it is the Porto Potenza Picena station.

My EuroAtlas Italy (2004) shows no train station at either PP or Montelupone...regardless, I would strongly suggest a car and driver...the convoluted schedules would probably take the better part of a day by train.

Last but not least, I did the search on Trenitalia myself. The train station is:

Potenza Picena-Montelupone

You do *not* want to go to Porto Potenza.

From Assisi on the Eurostar it's around 4 hours to PP-Montelupone. On a map, Montelupone appears to be about 5 miles from Potanza Picena.

From web pictures, it looks to be a very charming place.

Thanks for everyone's help.
NESSUDORMA: Are you as confused as me?
Yes, the website for Potenza Picens talks about a train stop IN Potenza!
I don't know where else to look for more information!!!

nessundorma Mar 16th, 2006 08:04 PM

tower, I've driven from Perugia to Ascoli Piceno (not the same, I know, but still), and it took me over two hours of fast driving. It says an 8:53 train gets in at 10:53. (So I was wrong in my above post. It's three hours.) I don't consider that worth the expense of hiring a driver.

nessundorma Mar 16th, 2006 08:06 PM

No, Italy Love, I'm not confused.

You have to change trains twice. Once in Foligno and once in Ancona (as explained above. Then you will arrive in Potenza Picena-Montelupone station. I'm assuming that station is much closer to Montelupone, but it may be in between. These hilltowns can't have train stations right in them.

So you will have to hire a taxi or take a bus to Potenza Picena.

nessundorma Mar 16th, 2006 08:08 PM

Just to be clear: You have to hire a taxi or take a bus FROM the PP-Montelupone station. Or have somebody pick you up. It probably is too far to walk.

Nessundorma: thanks for your great help.
I'll think if I take the train OR hire a car with a driver.
Where do I find info about hiring a driver?
Thanks again!

nessundorma Mar 16th, 2006 08:24 PM

Do you mean how do you get a driver from Assisi, or how do you get a driver from Portenza Piceno?

If from Assisi, I would just ask when I get to Assisi. If you have a hotel booked in Assisi, ask them how much it is likely to cost.

I'll be amazed if you tell me you are going to Potenza Picena but you don't know anybody there. But if that's the case, you might try looking around the commune's website for an e-mail contact, or if all else fails, contact Marche Voyager and ask them for help.

Nessudorma:
Nop, I don't know anybody in Potenza Picena.
The only reason I'm going is because my granpa was born there and I want to see the place.
My first stop in Italy is Rome for 5 days, from there I'll go to Assisi and will travel to Potenza Picena WHILE I'm in Assisi, just for the day.
If it's not that expensive, I'll hire a driver.
Thanks for your comments.

nessundorma Mar 16th, 2006 08:41 PM

Looks like a great town. Maybe you could rent a car for the day.

I'm sure once you get there, people will be very interested to know that you are a relative.

Oh -- and if you need a taxi, I found this on the website:

Taxi: Piazza Matteotti 5
