My CU ATM card is Visa also (Star and Cirrus on the back), but I have a CU Mastercard which is just a credit card not an ATM card.

My credit union card has Plus and Star on the back. My Bank of America ATM card has Plus and Star on the back.
The B of A card works every where I have tried it save at one bank that was Cirrus only; the credit union card does not. The 5 banks I tried in Switzerland were both Cirrus and Plus and several others. If the card does not work at the Credit Suisse, the Raiffeisen Bank, Lloyds TSB, or HSBC, I don't think it will work anywhere in Switzerland. It may, but I could not find such a bank. Hence I conclude that the network affiliation has nothing to do with the situation, at least on the surface. Are all Plus cards not created equal? Seems so. |
Bob_brown, Is your Capital one card a cash card or a VISA card if I may ask?? I just applied for a VISA card from them since it seems most Fodorites prefer their card. I already have a B of A. I also have a CU card. I will cross my fingers it will work for me.

My Capital One is a Master Card, straight credit card account.
Never had it rejected in Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and the UK. My other plastic on which I will rely for ATM money is a Fidelity Investments Visa Debit Card. I will also have my B of A ATM card just in case. It seems to work quite well too. I just get irritated when I have to pay $5.00 fees when no correspondent bank is available. Hence it is a last resort. |
