Confused About Croatia
I am planning a trip to Croatia in mid July, and I am just overwhelmed by the amount of beautiful places that I want to see. My question is, for a first trip to Croatia (two weeks is the time frame), do people who've been there recommend trying to see a little bit of each section from Zagreb to Dubrovnik, or is there enough to see just on the Dalmatia coast- maybe making Dubrovnik a center and taking day trips? Any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks!

Red, It is tough because there is so much to see. My preference would be to start on the Istrian Peninsula and then take a ferry from Rejika to Dubrovnik. You can fly out of Dubrovnik. On Istria, I would base in Rovinj. You can bus to Rejika and stop on Hvar, Split or Korcula if you like, picking up a ferry in a few days to continue on to Dubrovnik.

Hi Elana - we're going to Croatia for the first time in June for 12 days - flying in and out of Dubrovnik. We were told to spend five nights at least there, and take a couple of nights to go to Hvar and Korcula each. We were told not to bother with Split. We want to swim and that's our priority.

Red--- The answer to where to go will vary, depending on whom you ask. We started in Zagreb and ended in Dubrovnik but others, such as Grasshopper, started elsewhere and had a great trip. The real answer is that it is a beautiful country and you are probably going to have a great trip, regardless of your itinerary.
Having said that and as much as we enjoyed Dubrovnik, you will be limiting yourself too much IMHO if you spent your whole time in Dubrovnik and just took daytrips from there.

Hi Elana-I took my first trip to Croatia in September and loved it. We were there 9 days and basically stayed along the coast. We were in Zagreb very briefly, and it looked interesting, but it is a totally different vibe-if you want more of a city, Eastern European thing Zagreb is it, whereas the coast is very Mediterranean.
I definitely wouldn't stay in Dubrovnik the whole time-in July there should be plenty of ferries, and you can travel up and down the coast easily. We enjoyed every place we visited, Pula, Rovinj, Split, Hvar, Korcula and Dubrovnik, with Rovinj, Hvar and Dubrovnik the highlights.
Another thing to remember is that although Croatia isn't particularly big, it's oddly shaped, and doesn't have the same caliber of train service as the rest of Europe. To get from Dubrovnik to Zagreb or Istria in less than a day, you more or less have to take a plane. Dubrovnik to Zagreb covers an awful lot of territory.
Have a great time!
