Make reservations now to see the Last Supper while in Milan!

<<I have read that most of tuscany can be seen in a day.>>

I'd love to know where you read that. That's, well, truly laughable, but 2.5 days would be a start. Florence is IN Tuscany, so perhaps you could spend a day in Florence and a day in a couple of the hill towns that are accessible by bus.

You could certainly do Venice for 2.5 days and see quite a bit.

Really, there are lots of choices. Read a guidebook or two to get an idea of what would appeal most to you.

Male or female?

Do you like city things or country things?

Do you like history and art or just hanging out?

Do you speak any Italian?

When you close your eyes and think, "I'm in Italy!" what do you see? We can try to help you find it!

If you are in Milan and only have 2.5 days, I would stay north and spend those days in Venice.

Tuscany is no bigger than New Hampshire - certainly it's possible to traverse from one of Tuscany an back in one day. You can then check Tuscany off the bucket list.

Hi tg,

You might wish to look up Italy under "Destinations"

((I))

bobthenavigator May 27th, 2011 03:31 PM

Yes,you can see Tuscany in one---month !

nytraveler May 27th, 2011 05:07 PM

You can drive through Tuscany easily in a day - or take a train through it. But you won;t have seen anything. to get any real feel for Tuscany (outside of Florence which deserves 3 or 4 days itself) you need at least 3 days and a car to drive to various towns - and that will just be a tiny taste.

Agree you need to tell us your interests to give decent advice.

As for a Visa - without knowing your nationality - how can we possibly answer?

thank you...

If I was in Milan with 2.5 days available at the end of June I would head for Lake Como. It is a quick one hour train ride, plus it is cool and beautiful that time of year.

I would spend one day exploring the lake area and the other going to St. Moritz via the Bernina Pass. I cannot give you a definitive answer regarding the multiple entry Schengan visa because I do not know your nationality, but we have made this trip twice and never had any problem.

From Varenna on Lake Como you will need to catch an early train to Tirano (1 1/2 hours) on the Italian/Swiss boarder. In Tirano you will leave the Italian station and walk across the piazza to the Swiss station. If there are any problems relative to visas this is where you will find out. The trip through the Bernina Pass is spectacular. It is the train ride through the alps that does not require you to go through a tunnel. Instead, you go up and over the alps with views of glaciers and mountain lakes everywhere.

Allow yourself an entire 12 hours for the round trip. The Swiss part is a long ride so bring food. You will stop at a station/lodge at the top of the mountains for 17 minutes but their food selection is limited. We always pick-up a picnic lunch in Tirano.

In Varenna you must purchase your train tickets at the local travel agency (I Viaggi del Tivano) which is on the way to the station and easy to find.

The Lake Como area is very popular with Italians during July and August as they attempt to escape the heat of the cities. It may be difficult finding a place to stay at this late date. Here are a couple of places we have stayed in Varenna.

The Orange House
http://www.orangehouse.org/en/index.htm

Hotel Olivedo
http://www.olivedo.it/

We have heard that the Albergo Milano is good too but we have never stayed there.

You may also want to check-out Bellagio and Menaggio for places to stay. Both are easily accessible via ferry from Varenna.

I would take the train to Comom and stay round the lake for your remaining time....else you're just going to end up travelling rather than seeing...

"for this ill need a Multiple entry Schengan. Visa?"

Switzerland is now in Schengen. So "multiple entry" isn't an issue. It would be if you went off to Croatia, Britain or Romania, though

babylon May 28th, 2011 05:08 AM

I second Lake Como. We stayed at the Hotel Centrale in Bellagio and it was fine and reasonable. We took a ferry to visit some beautiful towns around the lake. Very easy day. Just make sure that the weather report is good, because the day we left it was cloudy and a totally different experience.

Venice also a good idea, could you do both with fast trains? I have no idea, but both are beautiful to just stroll around.

I read one can take a ferry from Verena, if the ferry oprational after 6pm in June??

ellenem Jun 15th, 2011 04:38 AM

The ferry from Varenna to where? Bellagio? If yes, check the mid-lake shuttle schedule here:

http://www.navlaghi.it/eng/c_orari.asp

ellenem Jun 15th, 2011 04:41 AM

Actually, you should check some of the other schedules at that link as well, because the different types of boats (shuttle, fast boat, car ferry) have different schedules, even though they go to the same places.

All times are GMT -8. The time now is 02:50 AM.
