Vit,

We are sorry to hear you are going to Santorini in mid August. From everything we hear, that is the worst time to go. Too busy and way to hot.

We stayed at Esperas Traditional Houses in Oia. They were incredible! Oia is on the farthest point of the island, and it was very quiet there. You could stay in Fira ( the main town) or in Firastefani (10 min walk), but i would not recommend you stay by the beach. You can rent a scooter (which we did) or a car. A scooter was cheaper and we just had a blast riding around. Also, the bus sytem is very good and it only cost 560 GRDRS for two people.

There are not many other islands to hop to from there for just the day. there is the volcano which we did an evening sailboat cuise which when to the volcano and then watched the sunset.

You might want to check out the Mionian ruins on the end of the island. The beaches are not really sand, but rocks and pebbles, and they get really HOT (bring flip flops), and definitly pay for the chairs and unbrella.

Let us know if you need any other info. We are happy to help.

Kimberley and Eric

Hello Charlene,

thanks for your message at Fodors.com.

We just loved Santorini. It was a beautiful place to just go and relax.
We stayed in Oia (pronounced E A). We stayed in the Esperas Traditional
Houses right on the side of the mountain. They were beautiful! their
staff was so friendly and helpful.

We found that there were only a few good restaurants in Oia. Our
favorite was 1800. Great food, but pricey. We also ate at Katrines
(seafood) down in the small port at Oia. It was really good, and very
fresh. They only serve what they caught that day.

In Fira, the main town there are several nice restaurants and clubs.
The one that we ate at was Kastros. great view and very good food. We
tried to get into Nickolas' but the line was too long and we very
hungery. We heard it was good, but did not want to wait.

Some locals recommended Enigma as a good night club as well as Koo Club,
but we were not too interested in partying.

As for transportation. Please arrange to be picked up or to have a car
already reserved before you go. there are only 38 taxis on the island.
We found that you do not need a car. the bus system is very good, and
we also rented a scooter for a couple of days. It was fun and cheap!

There were plenty of americans on honeymoon, but there were also plenty
of europeans.

I would not want to be going during the summer months. Too hot, and too
busy.

Oia is very quiet, no cars are allowed past a certain point. The most
beautiful sunsets!

Let us know where you are staying, and how your trip turns out.

Kimberley and Eric

Thanks for all of the info. The 1800 restaurant is mentioned in some of the guide books, so I will definelty try it. We are staying at the Vedema Hotel in Megalahori and Atlantis Villas in Oia. The Vedema is supposed to have a wonderful restaurant also.

Did you scuba or snorkel? Was the water warm?

Thanks again for your help.

Hello Charlene,

The water was cold. At least we thought so. there were people swimming, but we did not do any snorkling or very much water activities for that matter.

Have a great trip and let us know if you need any more information.

Kimberley and Eric

Kimberley/Eric make a good point regarding transportation from the port to the hotel. We arrived on a ferry from the Piraeus in the early morning, around 7am. Hundreds of travelers looking for transportation ... Once our hotel was in Imerovigli, we decided not taking the bus to Fira and another one from there on. But taxis were just impossible to get. In a way, we regretted not having rented a car (we rented afterwards anyway) and have it delivered in the port. In need, we found out a nice way to get around our problem though. After trying to catch a taxi for 15 minutes or so with no success, we just sat down and had a very nice capuccino and pastries at one of the bars in the port. We invited the owner to our table and had a long chat and ... asked him to provide the taxi for us. A piece of cake

Regarding restaurants, one more vote for the 1800 as bestin the island. The Nicholas, Naoussa and Kastro (lunch) were very good also. Our preferred snack lunch spot in Fira was the 2 Brothers parlor (gyros and falafel). If you happen to be in Kamari beach in the evening, Charlene, you may also give Camille Stephani (somewhat pricey too) a try.

Paulo
Eric & Kimberley, Thanks for your great advice. My husband and I are staying are going to both islands in August (I know... it's hot), and we are looking for advice mainly on Mykonos. Are there places that aren't too touristy? We're staying just outside of town. What about fun walks, day trips? Also, do you know Honeymoon Villas in Imerovigli? That's where we're supposed to stay. Thanks.

Michelle,

Imerovigli happens to be very quiet. It is a good distance from Oia, and still far enough from Fira. We do not know anything about the Honeymoon Villas, so, cannot help you there. We prefered staying in Oia. Oia is a very nice town with several little shops, a few very good restuarants, and no cars allowed past a certain point. Also, were we stayed in Esperas www.esperas.gr was very secluded because you had to take several paths and steps down to get to it. We felt it was like paradise.

As for day trips you are probably going to want to go and visit the Minoan ruins (take a guided tour) and go and visit the volcano as well.

Hope this helps,
Let us know if we can help with any other questions.

Kimberley and Eric
