Concerts in Venice
 

What's the best source of info about concerts etc in Venice & can I wait until we get there or should I try and book ahead. We're going to be there in Nov (for 10 days).

I have been wondering about that myself. Anyone willing to help us with info. on Concerts in Venice.

From the moment we stepped off the vaparetto at Piazza San Marco we were deluged with flyers about local concerts. Some were distributed by people in period costume -- you can't miss them. Our hotel also posted many flyers about concerts and other activities. We went to a concert at a church near the Rialto Bridge (San Bartolomeo?). The church has been converted to a museum for an instrument collector's ancient instruments. The concert was performed on some of the ancient instruments, and during the intermission we wandered around the space looking at the instruments on display. A very nice evening. Concerts are also held at the church where Vivaldi was the music director. I don't remember the name of the church, but it's near the Doge's Palace. I'm sure your hotel could direct you. Free concerts of popular and opera music are held in the evening at Piazza San Marco. Three restaurants in the Piazza have orchestras, and you can just wander between them. If you want to sit, you'll have to order drinks or food. This was the highlight of our visit to Venice.

My wife and I also went to a concert at that church--Chiesa San Bartolomeo. I dubbed it "Saint McDonalds" because of the McDonalds hamburger joint in the same building as the church, just a few meters away from the church entrance. Chiesa San Bartolomeo is the home of Interpreti Veneziani, a fantastic classical string group. Yes, some of the group played antique instruments, such as a 350 year old cello. It was a magical experience that I'll always remember fondly. I think it cost us all of about $7US each! Check out <BR>www.interpretiveveneziani.com for info on the group. As Anita said, you'll will see posters everywhere and performers in period costume on the street promoting concerts and plays. There seemed to always be some music/concert/play/recital somewhere in Venice at any reasonable hour of the day or night. Have a great time!
