como to venice by train??
 

Hello all!
I would be greatful for any information on the following journey.

My wife and I are staying near Como.
How do I get to Venice by train?

Looking at the timetables on Trenitalia.com has me confused. It looks like we will have to go via Milan?
We have access to a car so we can drive to a station. Anyone with any advice?

I have not been to Italy yet so I am not experienced at giving much advice. However, I did a google and found this post on another site. It does not have much info in it, I just thought it might get you started.

Poster GAC is the ni-plus-ultra on this sort of thing, but FWIW, here goes:

There are two train stations in Como. (Actually more than two, but for your purposes, two.) One, Como San Giovanni, is the FS rail station (trenitalia.com is the FS rail company website.) Look on trenitalia.com, you want to pick a train that will take you directly to Milano Centrale, Milan's main station (I think it's abbreviated M.le.)

The other rail station in Como I referred to - hope I remember correctly - is Como Nord Lago (?) is right by the lake near the ferry/hydrofoil boarding docks, and belongs to the smaller 'northern' rail company which you can find - again if I remember correctly - at ferrovienord.it. That train takes you to Milano Nord Cadorna - and you will need to cab or take the subway to Milano Centrale. Both routes to Milano Centrale take under an hour. Trenitalia.com does list a journey with this routing - just pick Como Nord Lago as the departure point. Which route you take is really up to you. (Personally, I would tend to go for Como San Giovanni and avoid the switch of stations in Milan.)

Once you get to Milan it's straightforward - you take a train for Venice (Venezia) Santa Lucia station, journey time 2.5 to 3 hours or so on an Intercity or ES* train.

Sue you have cleared up my question about changing trains. I'm considering driving now! looking through other posts here, it looks straight forward if we go and park at Mestre, and take a train into Venice.

I'm pretty new to this site, its really great the way people help each other out.
