Hello Helen,

For info on the Como-Milan train service see:-
www.fs-on-line.com
Journey time is about an hour, I think...

The nicest day-trip from Como is to the delightful village of Bellagio.

The easiest day-trip into Switz. is to Lugano, - another lovely lakeside town.

Another possibility is the famous train ride to Poschiavo and/or San Moritz...

Steve

Here's answers to some of your questions:
1. There is regular train service from Como to Milan. In fact, you have a choice of service from the two different stations in Como to the two different stations in Milan. It obviously depends on where you want to end up in Milan.
2. The train ride takes about 30-40 minutes.
3. There is a choice of day trips, via ferry from Como. Some of the favored stops are Bellagio, Verenna and Tremezzo. (Actually, the ferry stop for Tremezzo is the next town, the name of which escapes me at the moment.)
It's a beautiful area, definitely worth your time for exploration!

Thanks for the above info.
Which train station in Como would be more convenient to Hotel Mec Motel,22030 Lipomo? and which station in Milan is closest to the Milan Fair (Fiera Milano) ?
Thanks again for ALL the info given on this forum - absolutely wonderful - especially for first time travellers.

Helen

Hi Helen,
We will be in Italy late May and into June. Our last few days will be in Lake Como and it is supposed to be a beautiful area. We will be flying out of Milan. Looking at the map, Switzerland is very close and we plan to drive there for a little while.

This is a graduation trip for my daughter coming out of college. We are going to have a great time as I know you will too.

Helen, the train from the "inland" station in Como goes to Centrale Stazzione in Milan. The other one (near the lake in Como) goes to the other Milan station. Check with you hotel as to which Milan is closer to where you're staying. It'll probably be easier for you to get to either station in Como than it will be to get to your hotel from the "wrong" station in Milan. In other words, check with your hotel to see which is the more convenient train to take for your hotel. I hope this clear!

Dear Helen, the two train station in Como are "Como S.Giovanni" and "Como Nord Lago". They in walking distance between each other (20 minutes) the real question is that you're NOT staying in come but in LIPOMO, which is in the middle of nowhere a couple of miles out of the city of Como, next to the motorway! (by the way, why are you staying there? I assume you will rent a car! So why do you need public transportation to go to Milan!?). To go to Zona Fiera in Milano take the train from Como Lago to Stazione Nord Cadorna (Milano). Timetables http://www.ferrovienord.it/fnme/it/orari.htm once in Milan take the subway line 1 (color red) to Amendola Fiera.

Actually, Como has 2 additional stations on the line that comes out of the Cadorna Station and one of them might be closer to Lipomo. These are the Camerlata and Borghi Stations in Como and can be caught in Milan at Bullona and Bovisa Stations in addition to Cadorna. Please do check current schedules as I haven't run through here since last fall.

Thanks again for all the above info. Am travelling to Italy as part of an elective Uni course - presenting an exhibition at the Milano Fair - and accommodation has been pre-booked for this part of the trip. A shuttle bus has been arranged into Milan and back (morning and evening) but wanted info on public transport for between times and free days.

Helen
