Como summer 2011 - bad bad news!

Como has been blessed each spring to about the end of July with a magnificent art show at Villa Olmo. The most recent in 2010 was Rubens and the Flemish masters but previously there were shows dedicated to Chagall, Kandinsky, Picasso, Magritte, Schiele etc etc.

In 2010 for Rubens there were over 88,000 visitors.

It has just been announced - at this late stage - that there will be no exhibition for 2011. Frankly this is quite disgraceful. The excuse is the economic climate and problems with sponsors which resulted in there being a deficit in 2010 which had to be covered by the local authority.

The reality is that the local authority is incompetent and there is so much political infighting that nothing gets decided until it is too late and of course at such a late stage it is not suprising that it is difficult to line up the sponsors. On top of this the local shops, hotels and others who benefit

By the way it would be helpful if you just stated where you are from - city, state, country or other.

Welcome to Italy. Have you been reading the news lately? Berlusconi is in a huge mess as is the rest of the country. Expect more of this thing to happen in the future.

I am from a city, state and a country.

Oh, when I saw the title, I thought they were draining the lake or something. "No exhibition at Villa Olmo" does not bother me one bit.

me neither, so what. People can and do go to many cities with art museums to see that art. I'm from Washington, DC in the USA. If one has to line up sponsors, it is costing something for the benefit of those businesses, it sounds like. Maybe the city and environment will be better off without it.

The end of my message got lost.

If you support what I am saying I will let the local authority know the extent of interest worldwide of the Fodors community. Just an "OK" would do.

This has got nothing to do with Berlusconi. And I would support a similar initiative be it in Washington or elsewhere.

Please try to rise above the petty comments.

"Disgrace" is hardly the word I would use to describe a canceled art show.

I am afraid you are not going to get the support you hoped for.

Nochblad, you have my support.

California here.

What's going to Verona for the opera without being able to stop off at Villa Olmo for an art show?
