We stayed at the Hotel Espana in November 2004. It was nice, basic and clean. The bathroom in our room was huge and new. The chairs were slightly worn, but the room had new linens and nice hardwood floors. I thought it was a good hotel for a very reasonable price. The location is also very convenient off of Las Ramblas -- the only thing was the street the hotel is on looked a little sketchy in the direction away from Las Ramblas. But we felt safe at night. Staff were friendly and helpful. The "breakfast" was not any good - but that gives you an excuse to check out one of the nearby bakeries.

Hi Helen,

If you have been searching these boards you might already have seen it, but just in case....

Here is a link to my report of a visit to Barcelona in January 2004 when I stayed at the Hostal Girona;

Take a look at Hostal Opera. I stayed there and had a very good experience. It is also highly rated on tripadvisor.

hostalopera.com

The location is right off Las Ramblas, but not unsafe or noisy.
