Comfortable shoes to wear in Italy this summer and not look like a tourist

Clarification on the "sneakers are a no no" reply, since so many people seemed to take offense and responded to my comment! What I was referring to are the big clunky workout Nike style (often white)sneakers that I see New Yorkers wear all of the time, especially the commuters during the work week. I'm not sure where some of you live, but I see it all the time in the city. As for Europeans, of course they wear sneakers....but like I said, thin (keds, converse), not clunky style.

Am in San Francisco, and big white clunkers here are either for running/sports, or business commuters having to walk from public transportation to office buildings where they change into something more fashionable.....(I guess like in NY). Am far from a fashion snob, but, sorry, I can't get with the sneaker look either here or in Europa.

I agree Barbaque! I dont see myself as a fashion snob either, but I like to blend when I travel. There are so many other comfortable options rather than sneakers...but to each his own. I feel the same way about wearing baseball caps (unless your running/doing sports of course)...nothing worse than when I see a person wearing one while eating in a restaurant.

Hi. I too travel with shoes that look like tires - Keen sandals in purple. I love them. However, my current favorite shoe anywhere, at home or when traveling, is from ECCO.

I wore a new pair of these for a long walk in London, fresh from Heathrow. No blisters. They look great with dresses and pants. They have wonderful soles and are waterproof. For me, they work best with no socks. I wore my third pair of this shoe for the first time today.
I am a fan of Camper shoes, too. For Campers, it is fun to shop in Europe as there are relatively few places in my neck of the woods that carry them - and I like to try them on before buying, even online.
PS, I think the Jambu Ocean shoes look cute. Have a good time.

I am a BIG FAN of Jambu's!
Although I have not been to Italy before I am going to Ireland in June. You have the SAME pair of shoes I am taking. Talk about comfort! Put them on and walk forever. They are my sandels for the trip. My others will be either Keens or something on that line for feet that need to be happy. I personally feel people need to wear what they are comfortable in so they can enjoy their trip.

I buy pradas on ebay all the time. Great loafers and ballet flats. I wore them on my recent trip and got asked for directions twice. 
I took an old pair of converse high tops to hike Cinque Terre and did fine. I would take hiking sticks next time due to the slippery mud on the trails but did not want to pack a pair of hiking boots. You can be stylish. I must admit I did see a little of everything.

I was just in Florence and I wore Propet mary janes which looked just fine. If you remember that you are a visitor in their house, be polite, smile use a word or two of Italian and just look put together, you will have the time of your life and get everything you want out of your trip.

Women all over Europe wear sneakers and trainers in spring and summer. Including Paris! They are very fashionable and stylish.
It has been very cold and wet this spring in Europe, so of course you don't see them if it is cold and wet.
If you don't like wearing these kinds of shoes or looking at them, or billed caps, then don't wear them. But please don't make European women out to be something they are not. European women are women who wear sneakers, trainers and billed caps and colors. Quite regularly when the weather favors it.
A lot of American women have this worshipful attitude about European fashion sense and start trying to conform to rules that actually don't exist. Most French women are feminists, especially in Paris. Their choices for shoes, hair and dress are liberated.

Steve there is an enormous difference between the looks in those photos you supplied and the typical North American shlumpster with big clunky gym shoes,ill fitting clothes and a ball cap from a sports team or whatever perched on their head.

WeisserTee, I'm not saying most of them do, I was saying that to compare the looks Steve was putting forth as being the same as "go ahead and wear your sneakers and ball caps because here are Europeans wearing them and it looks the same" is wrong. It doesn't look the same at alll.
I know what the slob look looks like, I see it all too often right here at home, and maybe "most" American tourists don't look like that where you live but on my travels to Europe I sure have seen a lot of it. And by the way, I did say North American, including my fellow Canadians.

Raincitygirl: as a Canadian, I object! I live in a fairly small city in Ontario, and it seems like everyone is all about the skinnies and the "casual-chic" look depicted in Steve's pictures. I would argue that if we do something wrong, fashion-wise, it is often more along the lines of over-doing things; piles of accessories, lots of make up, overly processed and styled hair, and so on.
Most Canadian women I see don't walk around in track pants and uggs, big white sneakers and ball caps.

And I agree with your last comment for the most part, but you do see an awful lot of men dressed like that.
