Comfortable shoes to wear in Italy this summer and not look like a tourist

I have great success with Cole Haan - flats, wedges or heels. I have walked all over Italy in all manner of (stylish) Cole Haan shoes without a problem. If I feel a pair might not have enough support (like a ballet flat), then I just wear an insole.
Aliced, I am the same way. I need shoe options, so I usually wear my bulkiest wedges on the plane and pack at least 3 other pairs - and carry on only!

aliced & ekc- I'm not so much impressed that you can do carry on for a 2-3 week trip, BUT I've gotta say I am amazed you can pack 4-5 pairs in a carry-on sized bag (and still have room for your clothes).

I forgot to mention two things about the NorthFace ballet flats above: they are made from recycled materials, and they weigh practically nothing at all.
Was at DSW last week, and noticed a few styles of Sperry TopSiders.

Lots of women don't know about toms if they don't shop at stores that carry them .Upscale stores don't but I found them at Urban Outfitters and a few other department storesT. hat tom tsg annoys me

Tabernash, they can be found here in every store that sells shoes, and in many that don't! And on the feet of every 20-something young woman (and many men). I love their business model, unfortunately, I don't find their shoes comfortable (I think I'm in-between sizes).

There are in ALL kinds of stores, department stores, shoe stores, even some grocery stores. They are on the feet of about every 5th person in Seattle. And ads in magazines and newspapers. And online.

Thanks, cig and sf. I did just search and found the product line at Nordstroms. There are some very cute sunglasses, but I wonder how their outreach program works with those. Maybe a percent of profit.
If my 20-somethings were here, I'd probably know about Toms, as I'd be in Urban Outfitters with them.

We need a thread on ideas like that. I once bought a great solar flashlight, and one was given to an African community without its own electricity.

I was thinking about this thread today as I stood in line at the Starbucks in my office building. I work near the Statue of Liberty ferry so I see a gazillion tourists every day, many of them from Italy, Spain, France, Brazil, etc. I can tell you that they are ALL wearing some form of ugly but comfortable sneaker or sandal, just the foreign versions. Even the ones who are wearing vaguely stylish shoes, well, they still look like tourists.
I don't know where this leaves me, except to think that you can't avoid looking like a tourist, but you still shouldn't lose your self respect just because you're traveling.

I get stopped all the time in foreign countries and asked directions in the local language.
I live in Philadelphia and see ridiculous tourists all the time wandering around Rittenhouse Square looking for the Liberty Bell. Many are wearing shorts and flippies in March.
Never, ever, EVER equate The Great and Powerful Thingorjus with these monsters!
