comfortable shoes for Italy
 

I am doing a 3 week trip through Tuscany in Italy and wanted to get advice on the best, most comfortable shoes to wear. Any recommendations would be very welcome!

I'd also recommend Mephisto - I bought a pair of Mephisto All Rounders - a very chic black sneaker that can also be worn out in the evenings. It served me well for a two month trip walking cobblestone streets and museums - very comfortable!

I am very demanding about my shoes being ultra-comfortable. Walked & walked for 3 weeks all over Italy in October. Loved these. Still wearing them now that I'm home, too.

Here's an old thread that may help. I'm sold on SAS for fit and comfort, but not necessarily style. They come in many sizes and widths for men and women, but are only available in their stores.

Naot, sorry.

Reading over these recs, I am reminded how imortant it is to consider your foot, your walking style, etc. Even within certain brands, you may not be satisfied. I bought a pair of Stonefly, loved the look, but the last isn't right for my foot. Naot I can wear, but only in certain styles. Somebody on another thread said the best thing you can do is just go try on a bunch of shoes, different brands, different styles -- that's right!

I wore flip-flops and the were quite comfortable--just make sure that they are broken in and/or rubber.
I walked a full 12 hours straight in Rome with them without a problem.
However, my feet did get a bit dirty, as Rome is pretty filthy in some places.

coffeetoffee, bless you: you must be young, or just have extra-good feet! I, too, happily wore flip-flops for 3 months travelling all over Europe in my 20s. Now I can only wear Teva flip-flops, and certainly not for more than an hour or two on cobbled streets.

Hi Janey, Great advice above. The best advice I can add is this...

Make certain the shoes you take are well broken in and very comfortable. If you are buying new, buy now and wear them until you leave, hee.

Even a little loose fit assists as your feet will swell on the long flight. (Assuming, of course, you will have a long flight)

Wear one pair and pack one pair that go with every clothing item you choose to take with you, so everything is interchangeable.

Did I mention to make certain they are well broken in and comfortable?

I love my NAOT short boots. They have arch supports and they are really comfortable. I have a short black boot with white stitching and another in olive green suede. They are quite fashionable - not sleek - but very cool. I am taking my black boots to Italy with me when I go in February. You can get them on-line at Zappos.

I have somewhat flat feet and I have tried it all and the very best for me has been Arche --- They look nice, are soft, can take the rain, dirt, etc. and come in various styles. I believe you can get them on the net and some department stores..... They are made in France.

Had my first trip to Rome last June and got lots of advice on this site. Yes, it is true that your feet will get very dirty walking in Rome. I was glad to have comfortable Mephisto walking shoes for the cobblestone streets and then used Beauti-feel dressy sandals for late-night dinners. Mephisto All-Rounders would have been a good choice, too. I thought shoes were very expensive in the shops in Rome; don't wait to buy them there.
Get whatever feels great on your feet.
