Does anyone know if the Mephisto *dress* shoes are suitable (durable) for all-day walking around or I should look for something more casual?

Bev: A lot of good ideas have from this one.

Personally, when going "casual", which is EVERYWHERE except maybe fine dining or the theatre (not often, I admit), I wear my Adidas ankle-high cross trainers. They are a simple shoe that is comfortable and lightweight (so important). I also add a "Silver Liner" sportsole inside the shoe for added comfort. The shoes were about $55.00 and insoles $7.00 (last almost forever).

My wife has a similar Nike shoe and after a few days in Paris last year, her feet were hurting, while mine were not. I'm outfitting her with the sportsoles for our Germany trip, which I think will help.

Ben: Go "casual" whenever possible. Comfort is important as no one wants to return from their trip tired and sore.

Have fun, all!
I saw some Arche shoes in NYC a few weeks ago, i should have bought a pair.
I cant believe you paid 200 for a pair. I would expect to spend about $70 in NYC or paris for a pair but i guess it depends on the shoe. All i know for sure is that they're not $200.

Here in Boston there are only a couple of stores that sell Arche shoes, and they do indeed sell for about $200 a pair. I work in a hospital, and several of the female doctors wear Arches and swear by them. One of the doctors told me that in Paris you can get them for about $30 less than in Boston. So about $170 a pair. I hope this helps.

I just returned from Paris, where I bought both Mephistos and Arche shoes
for just over half the price that they are here. If you're going to Europe, I'd wait to get them there.

Does anyone know if Germany or other countries sell at similarly reduced prices?

Found the SAS store in Las Vegas in 1992 and later in Sarasota,Florida. Have been wearing them almost exclusively. They are very comfortable and hold up well to a lot of walking. I have four pair in different colors. SAS is for San Antonio Shoes. Try them if you can find them, they are not in the Northeast.

Oh no! I just bought a pair of Arche shoes today at Nieman Marcus and paid $210 (without tax)! They were the same price at Nordstroms. Although this particular style was the most expensive, none of the other styles sold for any less than $180. I will be in Paris in the beginning of June. I too, would love to know where you got them - especially if they're half the price. If I can get a store name & location, I will return these! Appreciate your help! Aloha - Ingrid

I have been considering purchase
locally of a pair of Mephisto sandals.
I believe they cost about $120. We plan a trip to Rome, and I am wondering if I would be better off purchasing them there. Would they be a better price? If they are available there, can anyone name a store.

Maggie Apr 23rd, 1999 08:52 AM

Sandra, I found SAS in the Boston area. Two stores, Michelsons, in Lexington and Needham.

Nancy: I have SAS moccasin loafer-style shoes and also sandals. They feel great and look just fine with casual clothes.

I travel in Ecco Softs: couldn't be better for walking all day on cobblestones!

My last european trip included walks in Rome, Venice, Florence, Provence and Paris. All done in a pair of $60 Hush Puppies. The pups kept me very comfortable while avoiding the athletic shoe look.
