comfortable inexpensive places to stay in paris, Rome and Florence
My mother and I are planning a trip to Europe and we are trying to find economical but nice places to stay. We have herd about pensiones which I would guess is the equivalent of a ~motel sort of but we don't really know how to go about finding them. Any response on either moderately priced accommodations or advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Consider convents in Rome and Florence. These have been discussed in detail, so you can find information on a search. There are several that are well-located and relatively inexpensive, with good-quality lodging.

Hi
Welcome to the forum. The pensions are more or less like a B&B. It would be great if you state when you are going and what your budget (in &euro per night is. Assuming high season and up to €120 per night
Rome: Try Hotel Panda - http://www.hotelpanda.it or Albergo del Sole Al Biscione - http://www.solealbiscione or B&B Blue Rose - http://www.bbbluerose.com. For convents try - http://www.catholicnews.com/data/stories/cns/guest.htm. Please bear in mind that alot of convents have curfews.
Florence: Try http://www.fmmfirenze.it or http://www.hotelbavariafirenze.it http://www.hotelcestelli.com or http://www.villinoilmagnifico.com/locanda/ or http://www.villinolamagnolia.it
Paris: Try to stay in the Latin Quarter. Try - http://www.hotel-paris-familia.com or http://www.hotelmicheletodeon.com or http://www.hotel-paris-minerve.com or http://www.hotel-collegedefrance.com
Have a look at www.venere.com for more. This site is down at the moment for some reason but for more convent info try - http://www.santasusanna.org
Good luck

Pensiones are small, usually family run hotels. You don't have to do anything different to find them than you would for hotels. And actually, the term is often used pretty interchangably with hotel. What you probably want are 2 or 3 star hotels, many of which will be termed pensione.
I can recommend Hotel Desiree in Florence, Hotel Picasso in Rome and in Paris, Hotel St Andre des Arts, Hotel St Jacques, Hotel Minerve.
The techniuqe I use is to google the name of the hotel, this will bring up numerous sites that will not only have that hotel you googled, but lots more. There are so many sites (Venere, suggested above is a great one. So is ITWG.com and booking.com) with so many hotels that you'll get lots of possibilities. I usually try to find a hotel listed on several sites, look at the photos and location maps, and then go to TripAdvisor.com and read reviews. Then I often email the hotel directly to make the reservation, but I have used the booking sites with never any problem, in fact sometimes they have a lower rate than the hotel's own site.
It can be very time consuming but I've been very happy with just about every place I've booked - which at this point is getting to be quite a lot. I rarely pay more than €100 for a double.

Last May I stayed in Rome @ Hotel Raffaello for 100 euro/night. The room was very nice and the staff was also very helpful. It included a continental breakfast and was very walkable to all the sights. Check them out @ www.hotelraffaello.it.
Enjoy! : ) jmf
