Comfort Inn-Nottinghill Gate(London)

Don't believe the literature that this is a newly renovated hotel. This hotel ruined a once in a lifetime family vacation. The hallway floors are warped/slope with numerous soft spots/holes under the threadbare and duct tape held carpet. Didn't have water in the shower 3 of the 7 days I stayed there and the room floors were as bad as the hallways. Most of the electrical plugs worked intermittently and the hair dryer caught on fire and burned my daughters hair. You'll really love the cracks in the shower being repaired with duct tape too! Corporate disavows any responsibility but the local manager did offer me 25% off two nights stay next time I was in London. Right, like I'm going back there again!

Thanks for the warning Cliffwhit. I have a reservation at this hotel right after Thanksgiving; looks like I need to go to Plan B (whatever that is!).

Other than the hotel itself, did you like staying in the Notting Hill area? I've heard nice things about Notting Hill but never been there.

Thanks again for the warning.

cliffwhit - How come you did not go to another hotel? My family and I had a similar experience with an apartment vacation rental in Kensington. We left after 90 minutes and went to the Holiday Inn. (which was so nice!) While I must battle with the apartment for charging me for the entire week, ended up paying more than twice what I had budgeted when we changed accomodations, the move to the Holiday Inn saved our trip. So sorry to hear of this disaster and will make a note to never stay there.

I stayed at this hotel in 2001 and couldn't fault it in any way.
I was traveling alone and booked a single room. I was given a very small room with twin beds, just perfect for my needs. My bathroom was very small too, just a loo, shower and basin, but everything was new a very tastefully decorated. I didn't expect to get a huge room or bathroom because it is a budget hotel. There was a kettle and tea and coffee in my room, which was great for early mornings and late nights.
The breakfast was basic but more than enough for me- choice of two ceareals, juices, breads and rolls and toast, fruit, cheese and cold meat. Coffee and tea- eat as much as you like! They did serve cooked english breakfasts at an extra cost, but I never tried that. The buffet breakfast was included in the price of my room and I only paid 50 pounds on late rooms.com.
The staff were friendly and helpful.
Admittedly it is an old house, so the floors may not be level, but I didn't find any holes or threadbare carpets. I did think that the breakfast room was a little dark and could do with a makeover.
The location was great, just around the corner from the tube and at the top of Kensington Church Street.
I was on the second floor and can only think that maybe cliffwhit was in a part of the hotel that had not been renovated, although I never saw any unrenovated area besides the breakfast room.
I would stay here again if I got a good deal like last time, but I would ask to be put in a renovated room after hearing this story.
I must also state that I am very fussy about hygene and have more than once changed hotels because they were not clean enough. I am not picky about quaint little B&Bs with uneven floors and walls and the like and often think that these 'flaws' add to the atmosphere and remind me that I am visiting a country much older than my own and I love that.
Better luck next time cliffwhit.

Cliffwhit, Thanks for the warning. We stay at Comfort inns quiet often in the US so would have never suspected so bad a problem in the UK.

It depends on the Comfort Inn, I'm sure. We stayed at the Comfort Inn Vauxhall and were very happy with it. That one is a three-year-old building.
