We stayed in an apartment in Vilanova i la Geltru for two weeks this summer. Vilanova (a beach town) is about 40 minutes from Barcelona by very frequent (and cheap) trains. Our apartment had a pool, and it was wonderful to come back to after a hot day in Barcelona. We found the apartment through www.choosespain.com.

For Foodiern:
No, San Sabastian is at the other end of the Pyrenees, on the Atlantic ocean. Barcelona is way to the east, on the Meditterranean sea. These 2 bodies of water are different.

But there are a vast number of seaside resorts near to Barcelona, many of which are accessible by train. Tossa del Mar, Blanes, the dreadful Lloret del Mar, the gay Sitges, the dreadful Salou, etc.

Tell us what you like, such as pubs/discotheques; going to a quiet beach with the children; nature and scenery; crowds versus solitude; etc.

Yes--but it was 1988. The Hotel Reymar was the best in town then. Good beach !

Honestly, don't you look at a map when planning a holiday? By the way, Barcelona is right on the sea.
