Cologne Hotel-near airport or train station

After my business meeting, I need to drive to Cologne for a flight next day. I will probably be arriving late morning and don't need to leave until mid-morning the next day. I have never been to Cologne and would like to see at least the Cathedral and the City Hall/Old Market Squares. Should I stay in a hotel at or near the airport or should I stay near the train station and take the train to the airport the next day?

Thanks.

I would stay in the city, near the central station, and take the train next morning. They run every 20 minutes, and won't take more than appr. 20 minutes.

Except of the Holiday Inn (if I remember correctly), most/ all of the "airport hotels" are not really on the airport premises, but in the middle of nowhere. So it would neither be fun if you had to go there at night, nor would you gain much time to get the airport next morning easier or sooner.

The LeMeridien Dom and several other less-expensive hotels are within sight of both the cathedral and the main train station

Funny Travelnut, I read that whole thread before posting my message but did not bother looking at the title of the post.

Thanks for your suggestions, Cowboy & Dukey
