Cologne: Europe's Biggest Mosque Opens Near Germany's Largest Brothel

Well that's what i read some time ago when Germany's largest mosque, on the Rhine, was facing obstacles in being completed - some locals did not want it there. No complaints about the brothel, though, one of many legal brothels all over Germany.

What's your point? Because there is a brothel the locals haven't got the right to complain about any other building to be built in the neighbourhood? It kind of assumes that the streets were full of happiness when the city told them that the brothel would be built and that it's therefore ridiculous for them to complain about anything else.

As for new Christian churches, put in Kirchenneubau into google and I think you'll be surprised. Two weeks ago is the last I found.

Herr Hans:

Meant no editorial comment - just thought it odd these two 'biggest' entities were so close together. Kind of funny to me and i applaud Germany for being so open minded on both - though the latter was a struggle to get built i guess.

Interesting. Seems to me that these are incompatible. I wonder whether they can coexist. Time will tell. ((*))

Hans Oct 28th, 2008 07:30 AM

PalenQ: Yes, large mosques make people feel uneasy. Whether that's fair or rational is another question.

Jed: Immigration from Muslim countries to Germany isn't a new trend but most first generation immigrants came several decades ago. They obviously built mosques but most of them are converted places and less obvious than the new one in cologne.
Since red light districts and mosques coexist since decades in Germany, I don't see why anything should change just because a bigger mosque is built.

And is not the world's largest Gothic cathedral not far down or up the Rhine?

Hans Oct 28th, 2008 09:06 AM

I don't know whether the cathedral in Cologne is the world's largest Gothic cathedral but it's large by any standard and in the city centre.

You can walk from there to a brothel, too, if you're so inclined. Not that this was any different when the cathedral was built.
