Colmar, plan a full or half day visit?
 

Through my research I am finding more places of interest to us in the Alsace region than time will allow ;;)

The town of Colmar starts their Tuesday evening exhibitions of Alsatian music and folk dancing the week we are there so we will plan our day around that event. From your experience would you recommend that we arrive early in the day or could we also plan a morning activity before Colmar?

Currently our "must do" list includes the Unterlinden Museum and walking around Old Town and Petite Venise. Not as high on the list is the Musee Bartholdi and a boat ride.

If we didn't arrive in Colmar until early afternoon we could go to the Ecomusee D'Alsace or Eguisheim that morning.

I would appreciate hearing opinions or suggestions. Thanks, Deborah

Yes, a half day is fine! Your plan to do something in the morning, arrive in Colmar in the afternoon ane then enjoy the evening festivities will work well!

We spent a morning in Colmar doing just as you are setting out to do. We had lunch before driving back leisurely to Obernai (our homebase) along the Route du Vin, making a few stops along the way.

Thank you for your opinions. We will be with another couple and I am "in charge" of the Colmar day. I thought finding the Folk music and dancing event was reward for my research!! ;;) Ron and I will be in the Alsace area for 11 days, our friends for 3. I want them to see as much of the region as time allows. Deborah

A half day is fine for Colmar. It;s a small town and the old town area isn't very big.

Mathias Grunwald's Issenheim Altarpiece at the Unterdenlinden Museum is a must.

Has anyone done a daytrip from Basel to Colmar?

If so, did you feel rushed throughout the day to catch the return train back?

I visited Eguisheim and Colmar in one day. Eguisheim is tiny. It took me half hour to make a loop around town.

The Petite Venise area is also tiny. I spent most of time visiting Unterlinden Museum and walking around other part of Colmar. The city has interesting architecture.

The Musee Unterlinden is worth a half a day by itself. The Grunewald tryptych is superb and there are some Duerers that are worth seeing. I guess it depends if you want to do one of those "Hello, its Tuesday, we must be in Belgium" visits.

We spent most of a day in Colmar, including the museum. OTOH, we are around 70 years old.

Arriving in the afternoon will be fine.
