Colmar, France- 1 day need a car?
Hello-
I am currently in Basel for work and want to get out of the city this weekend. I am thinking of Colmar France- i can take a train from Basel. My question to the group is do I need a car in Colmar? or will I be O.K. for 1 day walking. Any and all insight into Colmar is welcome. Thank you! |
I once went to Colmar to spend the night. I ended up there for a week, it was that lovely. I had no car for the entire week.
It's an easy 15 minute walk into the village proper. If you can, stay at the Mercure in the park. |
No, you don't need a car, or even want one.

Don't miss the Statue of Liberty copy in Colmar, where the famous Statue of Liberty was made and then sent to New Jersey.
Do you have a car - if so by all means drive because Colmar itself is compact - a few hours walking and you'll see it all - but the Route des vins alsace - the Alsace Wine Road that runs north and south of town is a cute drive - cute wine villages pepper it - stop by prestigious wine houses for a tour and taste - just a sweet sweet drive. Riquewehr (sp?) is one sweet wine village just a few miles out of Colmar - but if just staying in Colmar itself no of course you will not need a car and may find the train cheaper all told then renting, gas and parking fees. |

Colmar tourist office's description of the statue originally called "Liberty lighting the world" - now the Statue of Liberty - see the photos of how imposing this is if approaching Colmar from the north - perhaps a reason to indeed have a car! https://www.google.com/search?q=stat...w=1066&bih=699 |

If going for a weekend then two days in smallish Beaune would be a day too much for many - but to meander above the marked Alsace Wine Road would be really sweet to incorporate with a look at Colmar and though there are public buses and even trains along the route having a car is much much nicer (or rent a bicycle in Colmar to do a short putz - nice part just north of town - I've biked it - it ain't hilly at all. |
We spent a day in Colmar without a car.
IIRC they have a sightseeing train. Enjoy your visit. ((I)) |
I was twice in Colmar, both without car it was OK. There are many small streets where you can not drive, the town is small and you have to walk to see it.
As other said, visit Bartholdi museum to see the remarkable works of the sulptor who made Liberty Statue. |
I was there staying in "Little Venice", it's lovely in that area.
|
Certainly if just staying in Colmar there is no use or need for a car - this is not a huge town and yes Little Venice part of it is really quaint - lots of nice restaurants canal side there.
