Yes, I believe that the Colliseum, Forum, and Palantine Hill are all closed on Monday. We were there about a month ago and this was the case.
Hope that helps! Tracy |
Chris, do you have a guidebook? Have you looked at the Rome Destinations section here on Fodors? This question is easily answered there, since it's a question of fact, not opinion.
http://www.frommers.com/destinations/rome/A20649.html "Roman Forum (Foro Romano), Palatine Hill (Palatino), and Palatine Museum (Museo Palatino) Hours: Apr-Sept daily 9am-8pm; Oct-Mar daily 9am-3:30pm. Last admission 1 hr. before closing Location: Via dei Fori Imperiali Transportation: Metro: Colosseo. Bus: 27, 81, 85, 87, or 186. Phone: 06-699-0110 Prices: Forum free admission; Palatine Hill 6€ ($5) Season: Closed holidays" I see nothing here about Monday closures, unless the Monday in question happens to be a holiday. |

"The Colosseum (Colosseo) Hours: Oct-Jan 15 daily 9am-3pm; Jan 16-Feb 15 daily 9am-4pm; Feb 16-Mar 17 daily 9am-4:30pm; Mar 18-Apr 16 daily 9am-5pm; Apr 17-Sept daily 9am-7pm" |
I just checked two of my guidebooks (Fodors & DK) and both say it is open daily.

When we went I purchased my tickets online from the following website and this is what it states on their website for the Colliseum:
http://www.florenceart.it/cgi-bin/bo...seum=colosseum Colosseum and Palatino Opening Hours 9 am to one hour before sunset. January 2 ? Febraury 15 9 am-4:30 pm February 16 ? March 15 9 am-5 pm March 16 ? March 29 9 am-5:30 pm March 30 ? August 31 9 am-7:15 pm September 1 ? September 30 9 am-7 pm October 1 ? October 25 9 am-6:30 pm October 26 ? December 31 9 am-4:30 pm Ticket office closes one hour before closing time. Closed January 1st, December 25th Monday Closed This is what I went by. I was assuming it was closed because of the above. Maybe its not and the website isn't updated? |
tcreath,
that is the website I saw as well and it went against everything I had read. |
http://www.romeguide.it/monumenti/index_eng.htm
"The Colosseum is open every day except on May 1st, on December 25th and on December 31st, from 9 am to 18.30 pm." I think that website that says it is closed on Mondays is incorrect. Since the website is apparently focused predominently on Florence, perhaps they do not have the right info for Rome. |
Rome has a long history of changing visiting hours without notice, often, and without apparent rhyme or reason. So the answer is a definite "maybe".

Just returned from Rome a few days ago, and the Colliseum is indeed opened on Mondays with the exception of a few days already mentioned. The Palantine Hill and Forum are also opened on Mondays. Mike
