college student employment opportunities?
 

I am doing a little research for my daughter. She is a student at University in Scotland studying medieval history and is looking to work during the summer of 2004 in Europe. Does anyone know of reputable companies such as tour operators that hire college students for summer work?

What sort of work is she looking for?

Is her main aim just to earn money? (if so I suggest not trying a tour operator)
Does she just want to have fun in her job? (e.g. a resort rep)
Does she want to use her medieval history course through work? (e.g. work at a tour operator that specialises in history tours).

Many operators hire staff for summer work but it would be helpful to have a few answers to the above questions.

Also how old is she and can she drive?

Is it easy for americans to work summer jobs in the EU? I thought there were roadblocks set up in the past few years.

she'd need some kind of work permit certainly.

here's some information about how International (non-EU) students can work in the UK. I'm not sure about regulations covering the whole of the EU.

I'd say she would be in it mostly for the travel and the opportunity to see the areas that she is studying. She'd like to make a lot of money, but realizes she probably won't. If she could get equivelent to $8 US plus some kind of housing/food, that would be about breakeven compared to living at home and working schlepping bras and panties at Victoria Secret.

She will be 21 and can drive in the US, but hasn't done much driving on the left side as of yet.

She'd like to use her history background, but if she didn't then it wouldn't be the worst thing.

I'll look at the regulations re:her working in the UK. She works now part time in a pub at school.

Provided she has a student visa for 12 months, she can work full-time during the vacations in UK (only). I suggest she earns as much as possible at the start of her vacation and then travel with the money in Europe. There are no easy ways for Americans to pick up casual jobs in Europe, at least legally. Tour operators etc will insist on EU passport.
