Colle di Val d'Elsa to Lucca for a day trip?

We're going to be based near Colle this July and since we've previously visited may places in the vicinity (San Gimignano, Certaldo, Florence, Siena, Monteriggioni, Volterra) we'd like to go further afield and are really keen on Lucca. How long do you reckon it'd take by car? Is it too far to perhaps consider a couple of separate half day trips? (We often like to visit places late afternoon when it's cooler and less crowded - hence my half-days question) Thanks for all your expertise on this matter!

About 3 hours roundtrip ... quite doable if you have a/c in your car You may visit Empoli and San Miniato enroute.

Thanks! That's a great help - esp. the advice on visiting San Miniato and Empoli too, hadn't thought of doing either of those on same drive.Much appreciated!
