I was pleasantly surprised that the last code Hong Kong gave works for late June. Does that mean it will remain in effect or be replaced by a new one? I know last year I couldn't seem to find any that worked after May sometime.
I could go ahead an book -- it just seems sooooo far away from now. A lot could happen in the next three months.

Thanks for posting the new code.

Hong Kong
If your group is 4 people and you're traveling together, the Gatwick Express sells 4 round trip tickets for the price of 2. I just returned from London 2 weeks ago - family of four. Purchased the 4 for 2 right at the train station - they issue one master ticket for your group to use

Thanks!!
As all four of us will travel separately....so we cannot enjoy the discount~.~

NeoPatrick Mar 25th, 2007 07:11 AM

gohedwig, are you saying that the final price is 1/4 of the regular? Since the code already gets you half price tickets, are you suggesting that buying four of them cuts it in half again? Or were you just suggesting that it's more convenient to have all four tickets on one, instead of four individual half price tickets?

Brockbank Mar 25th, 2007 08:12 AM

Couldn't get this answered on another thread, so I'll try here. I get the same price (29 pounds) for two tickets on the Heathrow Express whether I put in the code or not. What is the normal price without the discount?

girlfromtherock Mar 26th, 2007 04:28 AM

BrockBank - The normal price for a single ticket is £14.50 so it looks like the code isnt working if you were quoted £29.00 for 2 tickets ! I dont know what the new code is !!!

Re the 50% off codes - we may have killed them off - see this thread . . .

NeoPatrick Mar 26th, 2007 06:46 AM

Well, I guess that answers my question about our June trip which I brought up a couple days ago and it offered half price, so I was wondering if it would still work later. Guess he who snoozes loses. I lost.

Brockbank Mar 26th, 2007 08:23 AM

Oh, I didn't realize getting half price was a "fraudulent activity" I wasn't really interested in cheating on this. I thought it was a legitimate offer. I guess I didn't read back in the threads far enough to find its source.
So, having said that, is the HEX still the best way to get into London from Heathrow?

Fidel Mar 26th, 2007 08:47 AM

I usually take the Tube in if I am still upright after the lovely translantic crawl; it's cheaper, doesn't take that much longer, and since I never stay in Paddington I would have to get the Tube or cab anyway. And depending on where I'm staying it sometimes is a straight shot to "home."

NeoPatrick Mar 26th, 2007 08:58 AM

Brockbank, frankly I've never understood the idea of walking "halfway" through Heathrow, waiting for the next HEX, taking it into Paddington (for 29 pounds for two people), then getting luggage upstairs, waiting in line for a taxi, and then taking a taxi to your hotel (up to 20 pounds more depending on how far you are from Paddington).

I think it makes a whole lot more sense to hire a car service (Justairports is one) that for 30 to 35 pounds (less than the total on the HEX/taxi combination) will meet you at the airport, help you with your luggage and take you direct to your hotel.

I ignore the critics who claim Heathrow Express gets you "there" in 20 minutes. Gets you where? Add in the time to get to the Express trains, perhaps wait 10 minutes or more for the next one, take it, get your luggage to the taxi line, wait for a taxi, and then sit in the taxi getting to your hotel -- chances are good that the total time "door to door" will be considerably longer than the car service in -- as well as more expensive.

If you are traveling alone, however, the Express is a pretty good bet, especially if you can easily take the tube from Paddington to your hotel. It's also a good bet if you hotel "happens" to be a block or two from Paddington station.

Brockbank Mar 26th, 2007 10:45 AM

NeoPatrick,
Thanks, sounds like a much better idea. We always hire a van or car in New York, and since we'll have our luggage, I'm not excited about dragging it from Hertz at LHR, HEX, Paddington, and to out hotel at 12 Temple, Strand. Everyone on this forum always make the express trains sound so easy.

NeoPatrick Mar 26th, 2007 11:37 AM

And when the "critics" say that you are greatly reducing the slow down from traffic by taking the Express, what they often don't consider is that getting from Heathrow TO the major part of the city is not that much of a problem. In your case the taxi from Paddington to the Strand will encounter as much or more traffic slow down as a car would coming in from Heathrow. And I'd hate to see how much a taxi costs from Paddington to the Strand -- but it would be a lot. Added on to the 29 pounds for the two HEX tickets, this is not an economical way to go.
Use a car service. justairports.com is perhaps one of the cheapest ones. A lot of people like Ray Skinner (but he's a LOT more expensive than many others). I use swiss cottage cars -- and call them direct to set it up. 011-44-207-431-2700. For a cheap call, dial 101-6400 or 101-6868 before all those other numbers.

Does anyone know why the HEX HAD to go to Paddington rather than somewhere like Waterloo or Victoria that would have been more convenient for tourists & businessmen alike?

flanneruk Mar 26th, 2007 01:15 PM

Because the Great Western line to Paddington goes 2 miles from LHR. There's no realistic way of getting quickly to any other central station.

The Crossrail project, to link the West with Euston and KX, has been mired in planning squabbles for about 20 years THe HEX could be built quickly

alanRow Mar 26th, 2007 01:20 PM

At least the reason for it is reasonably sensible - I thought it might be a typical London waffly regeneration plan for the Paddington area

gohedwig Mar 26th, 2007 03:51 PM

NeoPatrick
I was saying that purchasing 4 tickets at the same time and getting them for the price of 2 tickets was another way to receive a 50% discount (only if you have 4 people traveling together at the same time). Doesnt require any code; just walk up to the ticket counter and purchase the tickets
