CNN article: Some mobile phones are now approved for use on flights
 

oh no, there goes my quiet time for reading.
Maybe in addition to non-smoking flights, we need cell-free seating sections.

It would have been nice if I'd read the article before posting
seems it's not about talking, it's about other cell phone functions

I have unintentionally left my cell phone on during a flight in the past and we did not crash and l live to tell the tale. I believe that about 1 in a million electrical appliances will interfere with the aircraft systems. Almost all electrical equipment is tested to ensure it does not interfere with another piece of equipment, so really, the airlines are just being a bit over dramatic to be honest.

Anthing that will keep people from using cell phones on planes is welcome as far as I am concerned. . .that is one of the pleasures of air travel, IMO. I know that in a few years I will not be able to sleep on planes anymore because the guy next to me is on the phone. . .remember when you could sleep on trains? Taken Amtrak lately? Everyone is on the phone!

You know and I know and everybody knows that there is nothing to this myth that mobile phones can interfere with a plane's navigation systems. The airlines make a pretty buck on the use of their phones in flight which they claim use a different technology.

Remember 9/11 how on several of the doomed planes mobile phones were used to get or receive information and there was not the slight effect on the planes.

Nobody but nobody has come up with any indication that use of mobile phone technology would present any danger whatsoever in flight. And I am quite sure that lots of time, people have accidentally left their mobile phones on in flight.

Now if you want to argue that the airlines are providing a service by not allowing people to use mobile phones, that's another story of course. And there's also the problem of latching onto a signal as an airliner is jetting at over 600 mph but that's not why the airlines provide (or don't provide as the case may be) this service.
