Clueless Traveler
I will be travelling to Paris in September for a week. I would like to take a day and maybe visit Rome and a day in Monaco.

-Is there a train that will take me from Paris to Monaco and from Paris to Rome or are they too far apart?
- Does anyone know how long it will take and can it be done in a day?
Sophie,

No it cannot be done as a day trip. Rome is a long, long way from Paris and Monaco is as well.

US
Is there anywhere in Paris that I could stay where this could be done?
Sophie,

I hope you are kidding, right?

If not please get a world atlas and look at the distance between Paris and Rome and Paris and Monaco.

That should tell you something.

US
I will assume this is a serious question, not a troll. You cannot do Rome or Monaco as a day trip from Paris, they are hundreds of miles away. I do not mean this in a bad way, but please get a good map of Europe before you start planning. London can be done from Paris in a day trip because it is one hour by air or 3 by Eurostar (high speed train through English Channel, usually one day trips are done on Eurostar by most people). With one week tho I'd concentrate on Paris, there is more then enough to see there believe me, to fill up a week. Most "day trips" from Paris are to Versailles, Fountainbleu, Chartres, Giverny ... You need to get some books and do some serious planning.
yeah, in the cargo hold of an Air France Jet flying from Paris to Rome and back. Try Paris CDG. Oh, and don't forget to pack a 'chute so you can bail out over Monaco en route between Rome & Paris. Thatway you'll just have to get a taxi from Monaco back to Paris to complete the round trip.
Easy as pie.... Uncle: you are such a spoil sport!
If you do this it will have to be by plane not by train. The train takes around 9hrs to Nice from Paris and then 45mins from Nice to Monaco. From Paris to Rome the travel by train is close to 15hrs. I did Paris to Rome last year on the overnight Artesia train, this way I left Paris in the evening spent the night on the train and arrived at Rome Termini station the next morning.

Rome is not a city that you want to spend only one day in, if anything fly to Nice from Paris and go to Monaco.
I wonder if this is an example of the way kids learn geography these days.
No its an example of a poor troll. Like the other lame one called "which is Better"... same person, same crap.
glad that you have time to respond to questions you think are crap... get a life.
No, Sophie, YOU get a freakin' MAP!
Sophie,

You may indeed be a little twit of a troll. However during your little fun thing, you may have noticed that most people on this board are willing to help even litle fools like you.

It's a valuable lesson for you...try and make it part of your life and believe it or not giving is a pretty darn good thing!

So ...you do not need to get a life, you need to grow up!

US

sophie, pay no attention to these unsophisticated and unwashed masses. You certainly can arrive in Monaco for a lovely day. The heliport at Porte de Sevres is just so adorable for a grabbing a quick heli ride to all sorts of delicious places. Or just call Rainier, and have him send his jet for you. He's such a prince (ho ho he does love that little jest so much) that he'll even have the jet fly you to Rome for a day. Do bring him a small gift for his kindnesses - something in gold is always appreciated.
Sophie dear, people are picking on you because you obviously have no idea what you are doing & your questions make you an easy mark. Lord help you in Paris on your own. If you have no idea how far Rome is from Paris, then you need to put your vacation money towards an education. Rome is a whole separate trip. The train to Nice and then Monaco can be done, but you would lose so much time travelling. Why bother? For a few hours in Monaco? Not worth it. Enjoy your week in Paris. It sounds like you are going to have more difficulty navigating then you think (based on your questions). I would keep my itinerary simple.
I'm sorry, but this was just toooo funny. Could this question possibly be for real??? So, if I buy really good hiking boots, can anyone recommend a nice, picturesque route from, say, Madrid to the Ural Mountains? I am interested in seeing as much of Europe as possible. Thanks.
By the way... I only have 36 hours. Thanks.

I think some of you failed to read the title of the post. Obviously when sophie called herself "clueless" she was letting us know that she was joking.
where is the joke,patrick?
she IS clueless in asking this question.
I went to Rome for a day in February. I live in Aberdeen, Scotland! It is feasible Sophie but why not try flying!
Here's one unlooked at option, if going to Rome and Monaco is so important, and please take in to account that I don't neccessarily know what I'm talking about, but just happened upon these forums while researching for a vacation.

You clearly can't get a good day's fun in Rome or Monaco from Paris. But if your heart's set on visiting these places in a day, try flying to Monaco early in the morning, touring that for a day, then travel to Rome that night via train, getting a good night's sleep on the way over, and touring Rome for the next day, before casually travelling back to Paris, or even more preferable, end your vacation from Rome, and fly back from wherever you started your vacation. If this is not possible, let the other self-proclamied geniuses on the forum explain why, criticizing me in the process. But otherwise, I would certianly consider trying it out. However, as my final suggestion, stick to Paris and it's outerlying subburbs for your stay in France, for there is more than enough to take in on your travels, let alone Monaco and Rome, which really deserve their own week's worth of vacation.
unknown
note that you do not have the self proclaimed geniuses criticising you as fiona has proved them all wrong. It IS possible to visit Rome from Paris for the day!!!!!!!
It is possible, sheila, as are most things. Since so many of us are willing to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you really do want to try to do this, here's some advice: spend the night in Rome (& Monaco). Otherwise you will spend more time in airports & planes that day than you spend in your destination. We'll all be looking forward to your travelogue!
Sheila,

Of course you can...but to what benefit. A couple of minutes sightseeing and a rush back to the airport.

In essence it cannot be done!

US
of course one day in Rome is not exactly ideal but we had 8 hours ( not a few minutes as someone said!) and saw quite a lot. We chose not to go to the Vatican( an excuse for returning) and instead concentrated on Ancient Rome.We saw the Forum, Colosseum, Pantheon( brilliant place), Trevi fountain, Spanish Steps and the Piazza Navona. We have never included Italy in our travel plans before but, that one day has changed all that! Will be returning soon.
