Clothing Question for Italy in September
We're going to Rome and then Venice in mid to late September (17-26). I've read many of the clothing posts here, but was wondering if anyone could tell me if we would need (based on averages, I know it could be warmer or colder) long sleeves, light sweaters or jackets for evenings in either Rome or Venice?
Thanks for any help.

You could wear anything you like. How temperature sensitve are you? People wear suits in 100 degree heat, so your problem is of little significance. Have more confidence in yourself, get a life coach.

I've been in Italy in September in the past and will be there again this September. Temperatures are just beautiful mid 70's even at night is comfortable......
You can take a light ligth light rain jacket but might not even be necessary.
Pack very light, remember that you can always buy clothes over there.
NO WAY sweaters, heavy jackets

The nights tend to cool off a bit (thank goodness!) I have worn a light sweater at night a couple times this summer. I live on the water and that makes a difference. Whereas in Florence it didn't seem to cool off as much at night. I would definitely bring a cardigan or whatever for the evenings. But it does depend on what you consider cold....

WOW!!! That was pretty nasty. Someone else really needs to get a life!!
We're going the same timeframe. After a May trip to Ireland where I brought almost all long sleeve shirts/sweaters, I wish I had some more short sleeves for the day time.
I would bring layers. I am going to wear shorts and polo shirts during the day, and slacks/light sweater/wind breaker in the evenings.
Average temperatures that time of the year (upper 70's during the day, and upper 50's at night). It might get a little cooler near the water.
Hope you have a nice trip. I have a GTG post. You could do a search of GTG, and if you are interested and/or going to be in the general vicinity, we could sip a glass of wine together.

Thanks all, except of course m kingdom. If my problem is of little significance to you, then don't bother to respond. It seems that it is you that needs to get a life, let alone a coach.
As to those that provided information that is actually useful, thank you very much. I'll take the advice and pack some layers. I'm not that sensitive to cold, but my DW certainly is.
Budman, hope you have a great trip, and maybe we can get together for that sip of wine.

all of my trips to Italy have been late Sept to early Oct
Venice on average may be a bit cooler than Rome, but that's not saying much in specifics. Rome is likely to be hot, daytime temps hovering at least around 80F. Evenings in Rome I found at most I needed a light sweater or shawl, often not even that.
Venice can be cooler in the early mornings (50s?F) but then by 11am I wanted to ditch my sweater. Take an umbrella for the occasional drizzle.
Do check the forecasts before you go.
