Clothes for Rome
What sort of clothes should women pack for Rome this time of year? We will be doing tourist-things - no upscale dining, etc. Will be there only 4 days, so we don't want to pack a lot. Would a trenchcoat w/a lining that zips out for warmer days be a good choice for outerwear? Thanks!

truly we worry dont we
and when we get there we find that we have stuffed so many things of the justincase variety its just damned silly people dont care and as long as you feel you look nice in the photos then noone is going to look so many badly dressed tourists to compete with anyway! shoes are important so wear the most comfortable worn in ones do make sure you cover your shoulders with a shawl before entering churches...(this is if there are any summertime travellers preparing their packing lists) layers are always the key arent they so pack ensembles that look good together...tried and true i pack my red zip up fleece ( looks great in photos) and long sleeve tshirts and if i want to dress it up i put in some coloured scarves...just the synthetic ones...to add a bit of viv to a plain t shirt i really only wore jeans..nice fitting i did pack skirts but didnt wear them often wed be out all day and not bother to go to the hotel to get changed ..and as far as being in joggers ( sandshoes. runners .sportshoes ...whatever you want to call them...) noone cares...be comfortable..and leave the heels at home oh ..i did buy some loafer style light leather shoes...they were comfortable and a bit more dressy i took a warm black pashmina ( shawl) with me so even though i had no heels and was in jeans and a zip fleece... i didnt feel underdressed i also took one big warm scarf and a warm hat ..with a brim nothing that crushes ..thats for sure! have fun |
Make sure you have comfortable shoes, two pair, so you can switch back and forth.
I think your coat would be OK. Wear it on the plane. Besides that I suggest planning for layers - like a nice t-shirt, then another shirt or cardigan sweater over that, and your coat if needed. Here is what I would take for 4 days, it will easily fit in a 21-22" suitcase (plus what you'll be wearing) 2 pants 1 skirt (optional) 4 tops 1 sweater 1 lightweight jacket ass't socks & undies 1 pr shoes/boots small cosmetics/toiletries bag travel umbrella (optional) camera small flashlight |
lanejohann = Molly Bloom!
Sorry, couldn't resist! |
Thanks so much for details. I was wondering about shoes. Umbrellas are always on our packing list - seems like it rains no matter where we go...:-) Hadn't thought about a flashlight. Good advice - thanks everyone.

She was famous among the barns, and happy as the grass was green, as Dylan Thomas would say, and it was a huge compliment -- love stream of conscious speak! Now that I think of it, Dylan Thomas used it too in his last great play, Under Milk Wood.
