Clothes for 1st 2 wks in Oct.
 

We will start in Santa Margherita Oct.1 then Tuscany, finally Rome. I have only been to Italy in the summer. Oct. is sort of transitional so I really don't know what to bring. Sandals? Short sleeve, long sleeve, linen? Help

While October can be lovely in Italy, it's no longer summer. I would leave the sandals and the linen at home. The wisest would probably be to take things that you can layer, letting you take off or put on a layer depending on whether it's turning warmer or colder. You will definitely need at least one warmer top -- a jacket, a cardigan -- for the evenings.

It can be anything from shirtsleeve weather to leather jackets....and everything inbetween!

I bring a cotton sweater, a sports jacket and a windbreaker.

My Lady Wife takes a cotton sweater and her wool tartan wrap.

I've been in Italy only in late Sept and early Oct so far. Rome temps can reach upper 70s to 80 degrees F during the day, cool off into the upper 60s at night. It feels even warmer when you are doing a lot of walking.
For my feet, sandals aren't the most comfortable walking shoes, but if you have ones that are, bring an alternative pair of comfortable walking shoes or sneakers anyway, you don't want to have to wear the same shoes every day, and what if it rains?
In strict fashion terms it will be a little late for linen, but in dark colors you won't be embarrassed. Dark cottons will work well too. A sweater or two, and a rain jacket and umbrella are always good ideas.
