Closure of Nimes airport ?

Hi

this may be important for people planning to use Ryanair Nimes-Stansted or Nimes-Liverpool.

Here is the worrying mail I received this morning :

-----------------------------------------
You may have heard that the airport Garons of Nimes is threaten to be closed from the end of this month of January.

Like me, I think you will be angry to hear this news.

On behalf of all BritsNimes memebers, other English speaking people of the region which regularly use the airport, I am taking action to prevent this happening.

I am preparing a letter which will be delivered to the CCI, maire of
Nimes and the Agglomeration of Nimes offices tomorrow. This same letter will also be given to the Midi Libre, Radio France Bleue et France 3. The letter will state our feelings about this proposed closure and state the benfits which the Gard would lose as a result.
I am in contact with the directorice of the Airport itself, who has
indicated that the employees have threaten to strike from Monday
morning the 24th of January.

It's a real shame as today Wednesday at 1pm at the Place de la
Maison-Carrée, 50 free ryanair tickets are to be given to the public
to celebrate the 600,000th passenger since they started coming to
Nimes in June 2000. By the way to get one you must be wearing Blue & Yellow, the Ryanair colours!!

Please feel free to share you support for my actions by email [email protected] .

Regards,

Robin Boxall

Update on this :

Following several meetings, the matter is not resolved, but more parties are involved !

M le Maire has written a letter about progress :

Various parties are interested, but don't want to put any money into the pot !

We will see how this develops

Thanks for the update! I see on the Ryan Air website that the filghts out of Nimes to London are scheduled to "restart" on March 14th. I am sure they have just picked this date somewhat randomly while they await the outcome.

I read the letter concerning the airport but it is unclear to me the status of the airport. Will it close tomorrow or will it remain open as the debate continues?

I suppose one of the main challenges of this airport is its close proximity to Montpellier which has a decent size airport.

Hi

The flights are currently running Luton - Nimes.

The summer 2nd daily flight will be from Stansted.

The Liverpool flights are due to start 20 April.

Nimes airport is about a 40 min drive to both Montpellier & Marseille airports.

Since Air France abandoned Nimes and Air Lib went bust, the only commercial flights are Ryanair.

I guess they have contracts and have to give reasonable notice of closure.

Thanks for this info. I have a ticket from Stansted to Nimes on March 18th... So Peter, where did you get the info that the airport has funding for year 2005? Thanks much for this really really valuable info By the way, is it worth it to stay in Nimes for a whole day? What are the top 5 cities in Provence that i MUST go to?

thanks! Meg
