Closest hotel to Vatican
 

A friend going to Rome in August - wants to be very near to Vatican - somewhat handicapped so she needs an elevator for sure and easy access in and out, plus moderately priced. Any suggestions?

Best Western Spring House is very close to the Vatican Museum. It does have an elevator.

Bad news: you have to walk up flight of stone steps to get from the hotel to Via Vaticano.

Cipro Metro stop is a short walk away.

Does your friend want to make frequent visits to St Peter's Basilica or to the Vatican museums? The entrances to both are separated by some distance, about a 15 minute walk apart (not counting any waiting on security lines, etc).

Finding modestly priced lodgings with a lift in August (she will also need air con) is going to be difficult everywhere in Rome, and evenmoreso in such a popular area. The most efficient thing to do is to use booking.com to put in the actual travel dates, tick the boxes for "elevator/lift" and "air con" (and wi-fi?) and see what comes up within budget. Booking.com shows available on a map, so it's possible to see which of the available hotels is near the Vatican.

But she might need to stay further than walking distance from the Vatican and use taxis or, if she is able, the metro or buses. Good luck!

Perhaps a monastery stay would work. There are two located facing Piazza San Pietro.

The last one has the highest rate, albeit still what I would call 'moderate.'

We stayed in a monastery in Rome many years ago and it was a totally charming experience, and very modestly priced for Rome. Ours was a 1950's era building, no elevator or AC.

There are 2-3 convents in front of the Vatican with easy access. There are more behind the Vatican and a few blocks away. One is fancy (similar to nicer hotels), but costs more while a couple of the others are basic (have AC/continental breakfast/elevator, no frills).

This one is at the mid exit of St. Peter's Piazza (on the right if you are facing St. Peter's). Their online price says 60€ for a single (extra 5€ if you want AC instead of just ceiling fan), but some of these convents don't keep their websites up to date. If singles aren't available you can likely pay for a double.

Some of the convents I listed are on the Monastery Stays website Jean linked. FYI - Monastery Stays is a reseller that marks up the price. If you book directly with convents you will get cheaper rates (some singles can be 10-15€ cheaper per night).

Stayed at the Spring House years ago before it was affiliated with Best Western. Chose it for same reason - mobility limited travel companion. Worked just fine, decent place and quite moderately priced.

Quite a while ago, we stayed at the Alimandi and on a much later visit my uncle stayed there. Later still, my friend ended up booking her family there. Rooms were small but nice.

The hotel website states that they have an elevator and two rooms have disabled accessibility. The hotel is across the street from the Vatican Museum entrance.

They also have a shuttle to and from the airport. You have to pay for it in addition, but certainly made things easy.

The Alimandi is now called Hotel Museum--I stayed there in March. The is a lift at the exterior front steps, so it is accessible. The Vatican Museum steps are directly across the street from their front door, but I don't know how one would manage them if
