Clean up spam

I don't profess to be an IT expert but as a long time supporter of Fodors forums I am finding it increasingly tedious to return when confronted with page upon page of spam posts - what is being done to rectify this??

vincenzo32951 Mar 29th, 2017 03:50 AM

Since I'm planning a trip to Albania, I find these posts helpful.

How many threads do we need complaining?

Everyone knows there is spam.

WoinParis Mar 29th, 2017 08:38 AM

I like these threads.

Maybe it will help somebody some day at Fodors to wake up and say that they should do something efficient about it.

I had a dream ;-)

What ever happened to the spirit of adventure?

The acceptance of other cultures ?

Isn't it just rude not to learn South Korean ?

The posts are getting very disruptive and tedious.

yestravel Mar 29th, 2017 09:13 AM

Who are the moderators/editors these days? How doe sone reach them? I have sent multiple emails to different addresses and no one has had the courtesy to reply. (Not writing about the spam.)

Andrew Mar 29th, 2017 09:16 AM

The new owners of Fodor's have said they are planning to move to their own forum software which would be very different than what we use now. I assume that project is ongoing, and the move could happen fairly soon. It probably isn't worth much of their time to try to fix the spam problem on forum software that is soon to be junked.

If I were going to try to fix it temporarily, I might simply reject any post that contains Korean characters, at least in the non-Asian forums. How many legitimate Korean posts are there in the Europe forum? Any?

yestravel Mar 29th, 2017 10:24 AM

Haven't they been saying they are moving for many months now?

bvlenci Mar 29th, 2017 10:32 AM

They don't care at all about the forum, they just wanted the email addresses.

justineparis Mar 29th, 2017 10:51 AM

If I was a new person.. just googling to find the Fodars forum.. one look at the pages with all that gobbly gook and I would never come back.

Fodars is doing themselves some damage here.

Its getting worse and they really do not seem to care.

I go on other forums and I have NEVER seen it like this on them. .. any of them.

Andrew Mar 29th, 2017 11:34 AM

bvlenci: They don't care at all about the forum, they just wanted the email addresses.

For what?

I've not received any email yet from them, spam or otherwise. have you?

Switching from one forum software platform to another is not trivial. I'm not surprised at all that it is taking a while.

suze Mar 29th, 2017 12:30 PM

Well it's true that I've never seen anything like it on any other forum. Only Fodor's.

PalenQ Mar 29th, 2017 12:38 PM

How many threads do we need complaining?

Everyone knows there is spam.>

Hey hey - ditto to that and that the moderators know it and how it could have a deleterious effect on Forums participants are surely working on how to deal with it more effectively and it seems they do act fairly quickly except at certain times of day or night.

So we are preaching to the choir with these now redundant posts.

WoinParis Mar 29th, 2017 12:53 PM

Too bad certain times of day or night are days in Europe.

Maybe it is here like elsewhere : from now on it is gonna be America first.

Maybe Europeans should pay for the firewall.

suze Mar 29th, 2017 12:54 PM

Well it does seem the very worst on the Europe forum, PalQ.

janisj Mar 29th, 2017 01:15 PM

>>Well it does seem the very worst on the Europe forum, PalQ.<<

Actually it hits every forum to some extent. Often Asia is even worse than Europe, and the USA board gets lots of spam too but mostly the url title-types.

PalenQ Mar 29th, 2017 03:15 PM

We all agree something should be done about it - and I believe something is being tried to lessen it -it's not like these threads are telling moderators about it for the first time.

Like the doctor told a patient who was noticeably shrinking in height by the week - "you just gotta learn to be a little patient!"

suze Mar 29th, 2017 03:34 PM

<Actually it hits every forum to some extent.>

Except The Lounge.

PalenQ Mar 29th, 2017 03:42 PM

Yes Lounge is closed to new posters.
