Classical Music in Prague
 

I'll be in Prague in late Sept. and there are opera performances in both the National Theater and the States Theater while I am there. Should I select one venue over the other?

Also, does anyone have a reference to a web site to look for other classical performances in the city? Particularly chamber music?

You may want to ask on the classical music newsgroups (rec.music.classical.recordings, for example). Access these newsgroups by groups.google.com, if you've no other way of doing so. The classical music ones are really informative and the participants are mostly friendly.

A useful website is visitprague.cz. Click on the American or UK flag for English, then go to Culture, then choose either Theatre & Musicals, or Concerts, Operas, Ballets. A list of venues will come up. If you click on the venues, a schedule for the month at that venue will come up.

Thank you all for these suggestions! I've identified performances, but my dilemma now: which venue is the most memorable? the national theater of the states theater? they both have opera while i'm there and I need to choose one. :) Thank you!

If you want chamber music (which is probably my top choice for performance), I think it probably is best to just look in the paper when you get there (the English-language Prague Post). The smaller concerts or recitals may not be listed on the web anywhere, but are very good (those at the National Museum and the Klementium are very good). YOu wouldn't need to buy in advance for those, either. There is always something going on all over. www.ticketpro.cz has listings of a lot of performances of various kinds.

Happy 4 - do you know which operas are playing at each of the theatres? I've attended operas at both venues. The State Opera House is an absolute jewel. The National Theater is just bigger scale, but an awesome place, also. Being on the river, it is in one of my favorite locations. I would choose one based on what is playing. Also, the subtitles (if any) will all be in Czech, so pick an opera you know, if possible. (You can buy an English translation program there). By the way, I am assuming you are not referring to the Estates Theater (where Mozart's Don Giovanni plays). If so, and Don G. is playing, don't go. Bad production. Anyway, I'll check back, but whatever you choose, have a blast in Prague! (Also, I'll try to check on chamber concerts. I have lots of musician friends there that might know of some other listings). Hello! Just to close the loop: I'll be seeing La Traviata at the States Theater on Friday, Sept. 26. :) Ordered tix from czechopera.cz and they will be delivered to my hotel. Will also be checking for chamber performances once I arrive. Thank you all for your help! Can't wait! :)
